An amazing clip! Wonder what kind of wind it would take to throw a windsurfing rig 50 or 60 ft. horizontally through the air? Kiters need to worry about hitting windsurfers downwind on jumps. Looks like windsurfers need to do the same in conditions like this! It looks like it might be hard to survive in one piece an impact from a rig that heavy flying in with such force.

I saw unmanned flying windsurf rigs like this on Lake Arenal, Costa Rica when we were overpowered on 3.2m and 2.8m sails... probably 45 - 50 knots

Thanks for posting the clip, yes a ton of kiters. It is interesting that the winners rode foil boards.

yes, foils seem to be a next big thing in kiting...

I think you are right. It is no picnic being dragged over snow and ice by a canopy before you can ditch it or cut out. That is an old looking parachute too, any idea what the year was?

A look back at some squally weather in the Abacos. It is a beautiful place, even under a hurricane watch. These squalls were spinning off from a tropical system in the area.

Can you say squall line? Here's a nice one. Winds had already dropped and shifted offshore before this one arrived. Often, the winds may persist and then go nuclear just before these bad boys pass over. Lots of kiters have been hurt by them and quite a few killed.
They are often easy to anticipate, I recall the one that killed a CT kiter was evident four days in advance. You can see them coming often enough. They also can pass quickly at times. If you know they are coming, that is the time to be off the water, kite down and secured for the short time it passes over. The wind can change on the backside, increase, change direction often by 90 degrees, or drop along with the temperature. Watermen need to know this stuff and act on it, in advance. http://fksa.org/gallery3/var/resizes...g?m=1391638361 |

Who said instructors can not walk on water? :)
https://pp.vk.me/c620730/v620730585/...lP9fwqW6KE.jpg |
An amazing capture of an apparent student/instructor induced kite loop. The water looks shallow, hope the student came through without getting too badly banged up. Just noticed it looks a bit wet, possibly squally out. Wonder if the instructor kept the student out when they got hit by some gusts? It has happened before sad to say.
