Ice fish while Kiting????

About 9 of us ended up out at North Beach today.
That was the coldest day of riding I remember for quite a long time (in this area). |
My face was cold today! The sun was our saving grace. Was a really nice session today. There were 8 or 9 of us up north all day.

One by-product of really cold weather for extended periods is fish kills.

Yeah. I went for a bike ride today out on SPB and saw hundreds of dead fish.
Keep in mind that they clean the beach from Blind Pass to PaG each morning out there with the tractors, so what you see out there is just one day's accumulation, I believe. I saw primarily silver jennies and some mullet. http://www.sealitsoc.org/images/scan...lver_jenny.jpg |

Not near as bad as the red tide a few years ago. Anyone that was around here remembers that for sure. Shore Acres to the Gulf was packed with dead fish. |
I remember that, it was horrible (primarily for its duration... all friggin summer it seemed.)

Ahhhhh yesss, the burning throat and lungs.....
Fish bones in the feet.... And the lovely smells of the sea.... (The dolphin carcass at the Skyway was the worst! You could smell it driving on the bridge with the windows up.) East Beach had a giant sea turtle and hundreds of dead reds along the shore. That's when I remember meeting Bob Shady, when he donated the use of the Unimog truck for hauling all that sushi & seaweed salad down to the restaurant, (or something like that....:p) Anybody hungry? BTW, my solution for cold hands last week was surgical gloves. Works like a charm and I was able to stay out for about 4 hours total in 40ish degrees. (I only lasted 20 minutes with non-waterproof gloves, which suck the heat from your hands.) Next time, I might even go for maximum style with the super steezy yellow kitchen gloves and some duct tape. |
Ughh... forgot about the bones in the feet dealio. That sucked. Pretty sure those were burrs off of burrfish. Shaped perfectly (triangular/pyramid) for getting you every time. Sharp, hard and tough.
http://www.dnr.sc.gov/ccd/vessel/images/burrfish.jpg I just realized when you mentioned the dead redfish that Gordon put that in his Hurricane Dennis video (2005) so that was the date. The fish are at 1:30. Billy was just learning to do his first handle passes then, as well. Oh, the kites really sucked, I remember that too. :D http://www.spike.com/video/dennis-menace/2675848 |
