Lassing park loosing acces?

Today I was approached at Lassing Park by a guy who is a member of the local home owners association. He says last week during a meeting with the city and they have a plan for planting oyster beds and sea grass in the park, he says they didn’t mention any restricting for water access, but this may be an issue for kite boarders.

TBKA had an opportunity several years ago to host a cookout for the same exact homeowners association to familiarize the local residents with our sport- it never happened.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Good Luck.

The same guy approached me not to long ago and asked the same question, however, he asked me if it would bother me or any of the other kiters if they planted an oyster bed. I asked him where they wanted to plant the bed. The location they are talking about is on the far north end of Lassing near the mangroves. No where near where we kite so I don't see why it would be an issue if they did.

Here is a pic of the location he pointed out to me:

I went to a meeting tonight between the local neighborhood assoc and Tampa Bay Watch who is sponsoring the plan. There is clearly beach erosion on the North end and they plan to install three oyster bars in arc shapes. They'll plant salt marsh (sea grass) inside the arcs. In between the arcs are 20 foot spaces to allow access to the water and sand bar. The space between the oyster beds will remain over time and the arcs will not extend south of the big storm drain. TBW's plan specifically addressed maintaining access so we're good.

It's all in the planning stages but if it takes off may be a good project for the Tampa Bay kiters to participate in.

ALSO - The local residents showed up in force and they were pissed (for a variety of reasons). They're good with kiters now and we have every right to use that park but should make an effort to maintain our access, especially when we're hanging out around the road, when dogs are running by, when people are fishing in the water. This is definitely a park we have to share with everyone including the residents across the street. There really isn't any launches in the City of St Pete jurisdiction but as a resident I can tell you they will shut this down in a heartbeat.
