Draft Guidelines - Hobie Beach

These guidelines are intended as a starting point for discussion with the intent of developing final rules for kiting at various spots. Ideally the final lists should be short. The following guidelines deal with general kiteboarding at this launch and not instruction which isn't advisable here.

Hobie Beach is a dangerous launch with frequent gusty, squally, onshore winds with little to no downwind buffer but instead timber posts, cars and bystanders along the shore. These conditions have resulted in a number of avoidable accidents and incidents over the years. This launch is not recommended for kiting particularly not for newer kiters working on skills.

1. A "no-fly" zone exists within approximately 100 ft. from shore. Assisted launches and landing should occur beyond this point with no riding whatsoever inside this area.

2. Once their kite is flying, riders should immediately go out beyond the "out of bounds" swim buoys and stay out until time to come in.

3. Kiters shall use a properly functioning kite leash with well maintained quick releases.

4. Hobie is most used in SW winds which are often associated with cold fronts and squall activity. Check forecasts, radar, upweather realtime winds and other aids before riding here. Keep an eye upweather, land and secure before storm clouds arrive.

5. Jump to properly help fellow kiteboarders with launch and landing out near the swim area buoys. If they have to come in close to shore they may mess themselves up and your access along with it.
