MIAMI BORDERCROSS EVENT --> How Did It Go???

I just heard from Neil who asked me to pass along the following news ...

The guys are hard at it again and are calling for intermediate or stronger riders to join in on the
FIRST EVER South Florida BOARDERCROSS COMPETITION!!!

http://www.fksa.org/albums/album160/120_s.sized.jpg

What is it?

Boardercross is a race of small groups of riders around a set of buoys and OVER floating obstacles. Neil tells me it will consist of a course around five buoys and three floating obstacles (rubber bananas). The first Boardercross in Florida was held last weekend in Tampa. See the post about the Tampa Kiteboard Masters Competition for photos and info.

The layout for the Tampa race is above. The layout of the Miami race may be different in some respects.

Where and When is it?

Hobie Beach, Virginia Key off Rickenbacker Cswy in Miami, OUTSIDE the out of bounds swimming buoys! This is the area to the west of the Miami Sea Aquarium on the south side of the causeway.

Registration starts at 9 am, Saturday, February 11, 2006.

Who can race?

Neil tells me that the first 32 riders to sign up Saturday morning that are intermediate riders or stronger who can ride upwind and jump 3 ft. or higher on demand. Knowing how to both avoid and to try to handle line tangles with other kiters is important too! Helmets and impact vests could help.

What does it cost?

There is no fee to race OTHER than a SIX PACK OF IMPORTED BEER (Kent's idea).

And ... WINNER TAKES ALL the registration suds!!!

Remember ... don't drink and ride, especially with that cat!

Who is sponsoring this?

NOBODY! This is just a bunch of guys choosing to get together, solely at their own risk, to have fun.

What is the forecast? Checkout: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mfl/marine.php

If this works out, Neil tells me there may be more, perhaps a lot more of these in the future.

Hello Windstar,

I would guess things will get going around 10 or 11 am wind conditions willing. Neil tells me that the area west of the usual riding area on Hobie Beach he is thinking of using works with south wind.

The forecast moved in the wrong direction with regard to rain since the 10:30 am report. I just left Neil a message to post an update on the schedule.

Thanks for the heads up, fingers crossed for useable conditions.

Here is the forecast as of 419 AM EST SAT FEB 11 2006 from:
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mfl/marine.php

TODAY
SOUTH WINDS 15 TO 20 KNOTS. NEAR SHORE...SEAS 2 TO 3 FEET
BUILDING TO 2 TO 4 FEET IN THE AFTERNOON. WELL OFFSHORE...SEAS 3 TO
5 FEET BUILDING TO 5 TO 7 FEET IN THE AFTERNOON. INTRACOASTAL WATERS

the shoreside forecast that offers rain and temp. info is:

Today: Partly cloudy, with a high near 81. Windy, with a south wind between 16 and 22 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

See if it looks like there are inbound squall lines to the Hobie Beach area on the color radar such as at:

http://weather.sun-sentinel.com/rada...MX19&type=loop

NO squalls in sight as of 7:30 am Saturday in our area. This forecast changed a lot in just a day or so. It looks like things should build through the morning per the forecast. It is alreay 20 at Fowey Rocks, hope that slides into shore for you guys. Have a fun race!

how did the race go?

waterboards 02-13-2006 02:13 PM

bill parker took first, the man rips hard.

mikey bradly waterboards team rider took 2

not sure who came in 3 but if the 2 x bows didn't tangle mikey would of been 3 or 4 he had the smallist kite in the comp. 11 meter, bill was on a 18 and the bows I think where 16 meters .

don't take this to the bank.

Thanks for the info Lloyd. I understand from Gary that Oliver and Jason tied for third. They had a tangle and just walked in.

Apparently there were perhaps 70 kites on the water at one point, outside the boardercross setup. Heats included four riders max and was well organized from reports.

How did it go for other folks at the race? What strategies would you use in the future?

Looks like there will be more of these events to come.
