cant wait til the 2008 kites start hitting the used market..

really.. unless you just have to have the latest and greatest (Scott..hehe) there is an amazing waroo used market.

my 7m was only 250 and it looks like it was used a few times max.

I know that Dan got an entire quiver of 2006 kites last year for the price of 1 new one.

if the wind was a lot better tho, i might be tempted to replace my 9 and 12 2006 waroos with 2008 models.. whats the point if i'll only get to ride them once per month.

blah.

Skyway Scott 01-09-2008 01:53 PM

The best combo is to buy about this time (or a little earlier) while selling your used stuff at the same time. :) This is a great time to get last year's stuff at discount.

I still haven't replaced my big kite actually, Brian.

I don't get as much new stuff as some think. I just have lots of older kites in the garage.

I only got one 07 kite, come to think of it, and hopefully it will last another 6 months.
My Ozone Instinct lasted almost 2 years (for 13 to 30 knots), I had to replace it recently, went with the Waroo.
Not hard for a kite to last when it stays in the garage for 3 months like lately. :(
That RRD has some serious hours on it, as did the Ozone. I think I figured out once that kites cost about 3 bucks an hour (not bad).

Skyway Scott 01-09-2008 01:59 PM

I just looked at those. Those kites will be gone in 2 days, is my guess.
What's your guess, Danny?
Man, those WPs are at a great price.

Tom Stock 01-09-2008 02:04 PM

I used to buy last years gear but this time I am going for 08's all around. The kites are really that much better this year! Against my usual advice too.

they wont go that quick, maybe the pros, im even tempted to get one of the smaller pros, im sure that 7m pro would jump to the moon and loop like crazy in solid 30+, but i just cant justify it, especially with our wind lately......

Skyway Scott 01-09-2008 03:01 PM

I almost got one of the smaller ones for Donna, but her Ozone 7m has only 3 uses, so it'd be a waste.

I agree Tom. There is a night/day improvement in my mind as well from 07 to 08.
Otherwise I wouldn't have bought one.

I am sort of surprised that Best themselves don't say much about the improvements. They seem to downplay it.
I think maybe a lot of the 08 kites are better than the 07 kites, is what might be going on. Maybe Best knows it and doesn't want to claim to be the only company that showed huge improvements in kite performance this year (?).

I also think they don't need to say much anymore. People just buy them. They have a lot of momentum.
They use to be the kings of hype, to the point of annoyance when they first came out.
I use to get moderately pissed with their marketing claims and anyone that's been around for 5 years remembers all the forum fights I got into over it. The irony.

I really don't think it matters as much anymore. All the kites are converging upon similar plans (maybe divided into 3 main categories, like wave, high booster, and wake-style) and are getting good.
It use to be that one kite truly was noticeably better than another and a few really sucked. I think those days are probably gone.
I actually believe Bayflite now when he says "All kites rock". 5 years ago that was nothing but a load of crap. :) lol

Hey guys...
What about the type9?
Tons of people thought the hyper was the sh*t... Wondering if any locals have tried it...
Even though scott and al have almost convinced me to get a 08roo dont want to count this one out yet...
And the era... Their was lots of talk about this kite before...now zip...what gives?
(Maybe its just awesome and doesnt need to be talked about?)
Who knows....

Skyway Scott 01-09-2008 05:15 PM

I don't think you can go too wrong with most of the kites out there this year. :D

BigR 01-09-2008 05:21 PM

Jason,

Believe it or not , most kites made in '08 rock. But they ALL behave/ handle differently. So, it depends on what you like and what your style of riding is. Alot of people like little to no bar pressure, some like a more direct feel to the kite. The only observation I have on this is that alot of the newer people would have hated the early kites but alot of people liked their feel in some respects. Best thing is to demo as much as possible to find what you like and not pay attention to the people trying to pimp their view of what you should ride and buy without even trying it first

post script: some bars and quick releases suck..... still

<jason 01-09-2008 06:43 PM

Demo demo demo......
Yea I heard that....
But being a newer rider im too nervous to demo someone elses kite...
Being a surfer i can kite on my surfboard strapless no prob..but on my 140x38 well thats a different story...but im getting there..
Im glad I started on oldschool Ckites tho.. so i know what it feels like to get my freakin a$$ handed to me...
I am still using 04 ckites and at the end of this month im gettin something new..
Flew an 06 waroo16 once in about 15-20 more power than i was used to but it felt kinda sloppy...not sure what that was about...
Sorry to hijack this thread...but im just gonna have to group everones opinions together and hope for the best.. Thanks Jason

Demo demo demo

Yea I hear you Jason. I'm a newer rider as well and simply am not comfortable demoing someone elses kite... especially when I can't afford to replace it if I F it up ;) I am interested though that everyone seems to think the 08 kites are that much better. I'm still riding 05 C kites but think after this sad sad season I might upgrade (next season when hopefully a new kite can be justified). Especially since I like being in the surf and I'm having a hard time actually "riding" waves, I mean "waves" ;) with and it appears the depower of bows might be more suited for this. Or maybe I just need more practice ;)

Every year it seems the new kites are "so much better". I always discredited this as hype. I know I already am appreciating starting out on Cs and to tell the truth I really like my C kites. I did demo a bow kite and it had litterally no bar pressure, which I didn't like at all. Do you guys really think the 08 kites are that much better?

Skyway Scott 01-09-2008 09:33 PM

Not that I am all that great of a rider. But, as a new rider, you won't notice all that much difference between 07 and 08, most likely.

I can tell you this, you will most likely notice an ease of use issue between your 05 C kite and an 07 SLE.

Just think of it this way. I learned on 2000 kites. They sucked.
As a new rider, I honestly can't imagine anyone getting held back on any kite these days. It seems impossible to me. The kite is way beyond what you can do with it, for most riders.

So, you are on good stuff, either way (07 or 08).

If I was in your guy's positions, I would be all over the 07 Waroo kites at closeout prices, or just about any 07 you can find at a great price.

Once you have one solid year under your belt and know what to feel for, etc., then demo kites to your liking.

If you're curious, the reason I (and others) think the new 08 kites are better has a lot to do with that they are now packing power in small packages and still have good stability and predictability. Power and stability didn't necessarily come in one package in the past (think Hyper type :) ) It was like having an untamed horse on the end of your lines.

I wouldn't stress. There is good stuff all around and it's so much better than five years ago. Somehow, Jayson and others learned on 2000 gear, you guys will do fine on any kite you get. :)
In so many ways, kiting was more fun when you didn't know what to expect from your kite.

I kind of view kiting in the past as going to the cable park and having the speed vary all the time. That wouldn't let you get dialed, but you had to pay attention. Now, kites have auto pilots for speed, kill switches, booster buttons, etc. It's great to have all the options and you are in more control. That's got some great points, but I honestly think the one thing I loved about kiting the most in the past was not having as much control over the situation and having to deal with what came my way. It was exciting. It was also frustrating though, going from schlogging to teabagging on NW winds at the beach.

Anyway, no worries these days. It's all pretty controlled, relatively speaking.

You see? That demo worked. Now you know which kite to steer clear of and not buy. Much better than having bought it and be unsatisfied because of the lack of direct bar feel. Try some more until you find one that has the right feel for you and don't feel pushed into one that doesn't. I personally don't like that little bar pressure feel at all either.

As far as are 08 kites that much better? Definitely yes in the Bow category from 06 to 07/08. Haven't tried any 08 C-kites to say about those

inferno 01-10-2008 06:09 AM

if you like your CKites, then you might want to look at the new ones, i have an 07 8m torch and an 07 12m raven, both are 5 line ckites, but have curved wing tips and offer a good deal of depower, i can hold my 12m gusting to 30 and i havent found the top end of the 8m (have used it in 25 up to 35+ so far)
your welcome to try them out any time (just remember that they are super fast :) )

Its probably a good thing that I dont know all those fancy tricks Big R, I would be a real pain in the ass if I had those kind of madd skillz....
I am making huge progress though, I just learned how to cut n paste last week and I am up to 6 words a minute! (I am NOT joking here...)

Its good to see a little humor creeping back into the forum. The lack of wind is making me sErIoUsLy DeLeRiOuS and I need an outlet.
Uhhhh, its 4:19, anybody got a minute?

Skyway Scott 01-10-2008 02:28 PM

That's the main reason I have so many posts Steve, I can type 9 words a minute. :)
