New to Kiting, READ THIS!

I just learned of two NEW fatalities and there may be still more new reports on the way.

My sincere condolences to family and friends in these tragedies. I regret moving with speed to the rest of this but more will likely fall into the same trap unless we move for effect.

Both reportedly happened to new kiters launching in extreme wind conditions, one with gusts to 30 kts.. The other may have been gusting even higher along with violent lulls and direction changes. I don't know all the details yet.

WHY would anyone attach themselves to something with the power to kill and maim in strong to overpowered conditions clearly beyond their abilities? Maybe they didn't know about the hazard, appreciate its significance or know how to avoid it?

New riders have NO BUSINESS launching in such conditions. Reportedly, several experienced riders opted NOT to launch in one of these cases.

* IF YOU ARE NEW, TAKE ADEQUATE QUALITY PROFESSIONAL LESSONS. Ideas to consider when interviewing and selection of an instructor appear here.

* IF you are on your own after adequate lessons, AVOID winds above 18 kts., no matter how tempting conditions might be, until you fully develop your basic skills.

* IF you are new to a launch, weather conditions, etc. ASK locals for constructive advice and listen carefully to what they say.

* If in doubt, blow it off to live to kite another day.

* If someone new shows up at your launch, take some time to get to know them, their background particularly in stronger conditions. Their health and your access may depend upon how well you communicate.

Don't push your luck, it may not be there to pick you up again.

The winds seem to be back with the return of cold front season. There are a lot of new guys checking out the sport and all too often on their own. Have a look at the above information.

Also, checkout the following, you may be glad you did someday. It contains some important accounts particularly for new riders to consider.
