Wishing everyone a marvelous Thanksgiving with family and friends! If you can slip out for a short water session, here's to it! Just swung by the beach for a quick look this morning. Winds should be nice off Jupiter and points north today or in Key Biscayne and south with sea taxi to the flats. As you can see the surf is going off in the middle in southern Palm Beach county and well north up the east coast. Best to one and all. |

Bringing back the mythological bad old days with this 50 m monster when bigger kites were better. Actually, smaller kites that flew faster, generated more apparent wind were more fun to fly if not better as well. Simple projected area wasn't the whole story for finding power at the low end. I recall having a slow 23 m Airblast with a larger area than my hang glider! It was designed for boat propulsion which it seems to do very well. I have to say it looks a lot faster and easier to turn than my old monster Airblast kite. |

We don't have whales sightings much in SE Florida these days. If whale breached that close to me, I think I would look a little more rattled. Then again, maybe there were out their whale watching and expected something. "A woman floating on a surfboard near Santa Cruz, California almost ended up on the lunch menu for a humpback whale over the weekend. Barb Roettger had her camera rolling as two hefty whales popped out of the calm waters not far from the unsuspecting surfer and a pair of kayakers. A pod of humpback whales has been hanging out off the Santa Cruz coast, noshing on anchovies that flock to the area to feed on plankton. The woman found herself in the middle of a feeding frenzy called lunge feeding, which occurs when whales herd anchovies and shoot straight up out of the water with their mouth wide open to catch the fish. The whales have had quite a few dangerous close encounters with humans and boats in recent months. Whale watchers are warned to stay at least 100 yards away from the feeding area which can be a quarter mile square. Roettger says she has now gained a greater respect for whales, their feeding patterns and will now only spectate from the decidedly safer dry land.
