Fall/Winter Sessions 2009/10(Post them here)

We made it my fellow wind junkies! Summer’s over and the wind is back~ I’m so glad to see it too!
Time for a new thread, so we all can hear about other riders enjoyment/adventures in the South Florida area. Kiteboarding is exploding in my area(Palm Beach County) for sure, I’ve never seen so many kiters. It’s great to see all the stoke!

What’s the scene been like down in Delray Rick?

It’s been so good around here lately that I believe the only part on my body that isn’t sore would be my fingers ~lol~

Good winds ~n~ Be safe!

Hey Guys,

Welcome to winter, even though this wind is tropical in nature. Hell, we'll take it! Cold front winds will crank up soon enough.

Like lots of other people, got some nice riding sessions in three days over this and last weekend. Was even able to use the 9 m last weekend along with 11 and 16 m. Like those smaller kite sizes when there is enough wind for them. Big waves too!

There have been some nasty squalls but easy to avoid up this way with some input from radar. Not everybody chooses to avoid them then again, not everybody chooses to avoid readily dodged injury. So it goes.

Check this out from Saturday afternoon ...

After the rain passed

I've been slacking here and on my blog. Time~time where does all the time go?

I did get a chance to get in a fantastic sole session w/ Jeff Biege from BESTKITEBOARDING yesterday afternoon. We rigged BIG as the wind was lite and went strapless. We were able to squeeze in a fun hour+ w/1-2ft SE wind swell. Water temp is PERFECT this time of year!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a little somethin-somethin this weekend

ricki 10-24-2007 01:10 PM

Glad you guys made it out. I was able to get out on Sunday for a run down to Atlantic and barely back to kitebeach in Delray. The wind died! It was good while it lasted and at least I stayed off the guarded beach. Bring on those cold fronts!

HIGHFLYN 10-24-2007 08:06 PM

Yeah~ we kited also sunday and it was the same up in Boynton Rick (marginal) But hey we all got spoiled from the last 3 weekends now didn't we :D

Tonight was GOOD though! Pre cold front SSE wind , you had to hit the beach to see it. None of the meters (LW/BOCA) were even showing it. But it was there and we caught a solid powered hour 4:30 - 6:00pm. Flew a 13Bul & 12HP and mixxed up the session between a 125 & Surfboard. Surf was on the small side 1-2ft maybe. Super fun and totally stoked to be splashing around in the liquid playground~

ricki 11-20-2007 09:41 PM

Has everyone been getting some water time? The last two days had some good wind in the SE. Unfortunately, I missed out on most of that and have only been able to grab some late afterwork sessions into dark when even a 16 m may be a bit too small at times. Still, it sure is fun particularly with all the waves.

tonykite 11-21-2007 09:00 AM

Got great DP sessions the last 2 days. Powered on 15M.
Fun waves and very steady wind.

Did folks get out today, how was it? I went north for a change to a launch I haven't been to in a couple of years. It was mighty fine, not much chop with nice ground swells forming intermittently. The wind filled in a while later and it went off for hours all afternoon like that. Didn't see any spinner sharks but heard they have been seen in the area.

How did you do?

tonykite 03-10-2008 08:13 AM

69th ST was on the light side yesterday. People on 87th ST looked be way more powered then we were... Got another one this morning. Not easy to rig in the dark ;)

How were the swells south of the channel? I would swear when the wind is on and distant swells developing it is like going to Maui (not Jaws of course) for wave riding.

I was out yesterday on North Miami Beach from 6.15PM till dark and found the wind to be really light compare to what it looked like. (white caps all over)

I upgrade my 07 Waroo 11 to an 08 and got skunked 2 sessions in a row. The kite is fast and handle gusts really well but I am concerned about the low end.

Anyone reading this was out about the same time and can tell wether it was me or the wind?

Thanks!

ricki 03-26-2008 08:58 AM

I went out at about 5 pm until 7:30 pm off Palm Beach County on a 13 m 2008 Waroo. Initially I thought I might be rigged a bit big and so trimmed for mid range. Was slogging around a bit so came in and adjusted the trimming for a bit more power. That helped, also the wind was pretty gusty for no obvious visible reason. The winds averaged in the mid to high teens with lulls down to around 12 mph and gusts into the mid 20's. Still, there were times when you would be sining pretty well before being able to lock it in. I haven't used the 11 m but guess it should handle similarly. Have you played with trimming using the various knots on the pigtails? If you are underpowered attach closer to the kite from the mid point. If you are overpowered go in the opposite direction. I find I can't use the outmost knot on mine as the kite becomes too mushy. It is best to do this with pulling in on your trim strap initially. If you go above the mid range you will find that in addition to increased bar pressure the kite speed will decrease. I haven't noticed anything untoward about the 13 m speed.

Delray!

Went out earlier in delray. Wind shifted from NNW to NNE by 1pm. Perfect for riding the swell south down the beach. was blowing around 18 knots, then jumped up to about 25, then died off. Kinda punchy, but good practice for this noob. My 13m wasn't enough at first, then around 2 I was well overpowered. dropped it to the 1st knot, and was good for the rest of the day... 3pm at least. I work nights, so I bail early. I'm normally 1st in, 1st out... reminds me of my accounting class... FIFO. One thing that sucks is that I kept outrunning my kite on the waves. Had a front line wrap around my bar because of it. Thank god I had a buddy to grab the kite. it was sitting on the edge ready to launch bobbing up and down.

So where are the the south florida riders? I'm jealous of all the sessions I hear from St Pete and Tampa area:wink: . I have a buddy that lives there and might have to take a road trip soon.

I'm sore as hell today, and I'm off to class

Cheers

Scotty

Thanks for the info Rick.
I am on a A-B configuration right now.

C-C Configuration if underpowered
A - A if overpowered

is this right?

Thanks.
Tony

ricki 03-26-2008 09:14 AM

I noticed the wind was stronger earlier yesterday. There are lots of SE Florida riders out most windy days, particularly on weekends. Counted 16 off Delray last week at one time. There were about ten out late yesterday when I arrived. They just aren't on here, wonder why?

Hey Tony,

I usually don't mess with those attachment points, although in extremes I might. I was talking about the pigtail knots on your trailing edge wingtips. C kites and to a lesser degree, flat kites can be particularly sensitive to trimming by attaching to different knots.

I wrote an article some years back about doing this with C kites. The general concepts still hold, at least with Waroos. Note, on most flat kites there is no longer much adjustment, if any, on the leading edge pigtails.

Hey Guys,

The kitebeaches info is incomplete. I will send something off to Toby to update things. There are a lot of access issues at Tigertail.

btw, you will likely have a better time, warmer conditions and have to walk less taking a sea taxi out to the Miami Flats in strong enough westerly wind conditions to warrant a road trip Marco.

ScottyKeegs 03-26-2008 11:22 AM

Yeah rick, we need so get some of the SoFla riders a computer. Friday I counted about 20 kites in the air in Delray. Yesterday when I left there were about 5. People were waiting to the conditions to get steady.

THANKS to "Bear" who gave me an extra batten when I realized mine was broken, and of course I didn't have an extra on me.

ricki 10-21-2009 07:10 PM

Decided to recycle this great thread for the new wind season. Three great evenings in a row, this time with no squalls either. Just checked the wind has built over the last three hours. No wonder it seemed to be getting better. It was going 20 to 25 kts. when I came in. Mighty fine! Excellent waves and sunset colors to go with. Video to come.

Who else got a good session in???

Citispider 10-21-2009 08:12 PM

Nice Rick.. Today at Meade Street was very nice. Not too many kiters though. But the waves added to the excitement.

ricki 10-22-2009 08:48 AM

Glad to hear it! Folks are getting back into kiting statewide. It sure is nice to be in a normal fall pattern again. Just put a video up from last night: http://fksa.org/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=8811

Who else got a session in?

ricki 10-23-2009 09:31 AM

Made the fourth night as scheduled from the forecast on Sunday. Great first week back! Got squalled out again last night at around 7 pm, nasty looking one too. There was a 150 ft. yacht running inshore of it less than a 1/4 mile offshore. Thinking, insurance job! Fortunately, the vessel make it north and back offshore before the shelf cloud and high winds/rain hammered ashore. Supposed to ease off today.

How was the week?

troubleshooter 10-23-2009 06:47 PM

Got 2 nice solid 20+ knot days out of it. Work makes it hard to do afterwork sessions so couldn't get in anymore.

Was hoping for the weekend but man did it really crap out. Good first front though. Keep 'em comin like that and we all get a taste no matter what our schedule is.
