A look at Naish kites since the two line AR3.5. I used to have five AR5's, the first four line LEI's. They were good back in the day, no QR or spinable leash, those were still in the future. Too bad they antiqued the video so excessively.

Here is something for stylin' water goers everywhere, a look back at water drag. People want to look good, some more than others. The curious part is what may be deemed to be too cool for school will likely gag later generations. Interestingly enough, fashion doesn't demand function, in fact it may throw facility under the bus as you will see below.

Images from: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/travel/b...6.photogallery (lots more there too)

http://snsimages.tribune.com/media/p...1/59104090.jpg
This has to be my favorite of the collection. Perceived function overwhelms fashion, actually opens a can of whoop ass on it, fairly mugging style. This 1875 concept reportedly rendered the wearer unsinkable and comes with a marking buoy to prove it. They didn't have fins but did come with those nifty hand paddles that doubled for shovels at all you can eat buffets. I can see this taking off with kite pants crazed kiteboarders or perhaps spandex togged free divers.

http://snsimages.tribune.com/media/p...1/59104161.jpg
I have a theory about these bathing costumes, they in fact might have been intended to do away with the wearer. Imagine body surfing in one of these or trying to get out of a rip.

Now remember, this lady, I think it is a lady, was deemed hot 111 years ago. Bears keeping in mind with some of the off the wall gear out there today.

Strange things going on in Zanzibar. A lucky fellow, hope he played the lottery.

How did he get up there? He climbed, with a board, kite flying, meteoric winds ripping with a nice soft steel deck and derricks for absorbing impact errors of judgment.

http://www.stefanvanderkamp.nl/

You can see a sequence of still shots including Nick climbing up and jumping off the derrick at: http://www.stefanvanderkamp.nl/#TB_i...g_autoviewer63

http://www.kitesurferen.dk/images/stories/nille2.jpg

and some background from the local shop, http://www.kitecentrezanzibar.com/:
"kitecentre Zanzibar 17 hours ago
Just talked with Nick;
It was an impulse action he said, with struggels he could grap the edge of the boat and climb on it, after that the plan was just to jump off the boat on the other side, but than he saw the crane and thought, just go for it. With just half a meter on both sides in between the cranes he climbed up, binded the board with his leash behind him, no resque plan. .... At the take off, he was swept away in the wrong direction. He pulled the bar in the loop in the wrong way, he said he thought he would die. Suddenly the kite pulled him the right way again and he finished his jump. ..
After that his camera and all his gear was stolen, just after a beach elastic tow-inn session a hour later...."'

Nick Jacobsen is a kiter from Denmark. It would be good to get some more specifics but it looks like the jump height was a bit less than two line lengths or perhaps 40 to 50 m high. http://www.nickjacobsen.dk/

http://www.kitesurferen.dk/images/stories/nille5.jpg

If you don't think these things out adequately in advance it is good to be (real) lucky! See he has also done some static kite towups secured to the towline. Poorly thought out and executed stunts have a way of catching up with you. I wouldn't keep relying so much on luck Nick.

A blast from the past, Surf Expo 2002 to be exact and a Bi-Wing LEI Kite?! This writeup was lost during a crash of Kiteforum back in the day. Keeping fairly complete archives I was able to find it again. There is even something about the founding manufacturer of LEI kites, Wipika in its later days.

http://www.fksa.org/albums/album595/1_DSCN5370.jpg
The front

http://www.fksa.org/albums/album595/2_G.jpg
and rear view

This is what I wrote about it in my writeup of the 2002 Surf Expo:

"I just spoke with Will Harper, sales manager of WINDWING about their new variable area kite, the D-MOD. The prototype kite was on display at Surf Expo last weekend (see below).

http://groups.msn.com/flkitesurfer/s...oto&PhotoID=30
http://groups.msn.com/flkitesurfer/s...oto&PhotoID=31

This is an innovation in kite design for kiteboarding applications but a very recent one. Will told me that the kite went from concept to prototype in only TWO WEEKS! The patent for this kite is pending. The kite appears to be a conventional four line inflatable kite with the addition of a supplemental lifting section that is secured by zippers and Velcro beneath the arc of the kite. This panel significantly increases the lifting area to facilitate low end performance. With the panel removed, I understand that it flies just like a conventional four line leading edge inflatable (LEI) kite.

The D-MOD was designed by Bill Hanson who has extensive foil design and production experience. Bill has designed several foil kites for Slingshot and has designed the snow and buggy traction and trainer kites currently being sold by WINDWING. I understand that the buggy kites have been very well received. WINDWING has been producing an unusual lifting wing for skiing/snowboarding and windsurfing sails for years.

The prototype D-MOD kite shown at Surf Expo has a convertible flat area of 18 m to 12 m with projected areas of 14 m and 8 m respectively. Two other as of yet undisclosed sizes are contemplated for production as soon as March 2003. The prototype has been flown on land but not over water as of yet. I understand that it launched readily and flew well. Further trials and tuning are underway including selecting an appropriate angle of attack or trim angle for the removable panel.

Aside from being the first variable area kiteboarding kite that I have encountered it has another unusual feature. The kite has a "beak" at the leading edge that facilitates rolling from one side to the other when the kite falls on the water. Add to that the transverse stiffing provided by the removable panel and the D-MOD and they believe that it should re-launch far easier than other LEI kites on the market today. The kite is intended to be used by intermediate to advanced kiteboarders as opposed to new riders. Will felt that with the panel removed the kite should perform just like a regular LEI kite.

Will indicated that they kite is to be flown with a conventional four line bar with chicken loop. I asked him about how the kite would be depowered with a kite leash. If the panel remains in place the kite will not fully depower. He indicated that if the kite is flown off of one line only, it will not fly and will fall to the water. They are still evaluating if the kite will present excessive residual area for wind loading once the depowering leash has been used.

Will passed on some observations about the reaction of some of the other kite manufacturers. He said that Naish was amused by the design. He reported that Flexifoil was interested in the concept and asked a number of questions. Will said the Bruno Legaignoux of Takoon was very interested in the kite and took extensive notes and sketched the kite on graph paper. I expect to read about more developments regarding the D-MOD kite in the future. For additional information regarding WINDWING products you can contact Will Harper at info@windwing.com.

Finally, I asked Will about the recent major transitions in the North American distribution system for Wipika. Principals of WindMall are responsible for the distribution of Wipika and WINDWING products in that territory. He said that things have been going very well although it happened quite recently. Will said that during the first day of Surf Expo the reactions were mixed and uncertain. By the second day however confidence in the new distributor was building and they acquired a number of new dealers. Will was quite pleased with the experience at this Surf Expo."

Kiting has changed so much in that time. Wonder what will be next?

Something a bit different.

"The Mountain
by Terje Sorgjerd

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.

Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

Jetman vs. the Grand Canyon ...

http://www.csmonitor.com/var/ezflow_...n_full_600.jpg

'Jetman' zooms along rim of Grand Canyon in first US flight

"Jetman, aka adventurer Yves Rossy, hit 190 m.p.h. Saturday as he flew with a jet-pack above the Grand Canyon. Where some see self-promotional stunt man, others see a boundary-breaker.

By Daniel B. Wood, Staff writer / May 11, 2011

Harnessed into a six-foot-wide, 45-pound carbon-fiber wingpack shaped like a boomerang with a raised fin, Swiss adventurer Yves Rossy pulled off his first escapade in the United States on Saturday, shooting along the rim of the Grand Canyon for about eight minutes before opening his parachute and wafting down to the canyon floor.

It was a spectacle, to be sure – and the ride will definitely end up on YouTube. But whether Jetman's performance qualifies as a publicity-seeking stunt of the "balloon boy" variety or a quest to expand the limits of human endeavor, well, that depends on the beholder.

As for Mr. Rossy, he portrays his winged adventures as a bid to push the envelope of human flight.

“I built this wing to realize my own dream: to fly like a bird,” he says in an interview released by his Beverly Hills-based marketing firm, Centigrade Inc. “Flying is a passion. I always wanted to fly since I am a child. My inspiration has always been to realize my dream.”

Rossy does not exactly float through the air like a bird; he rockets along at 35 to 50 miles per hour. For his Grand Canyon adventure, he hit 190 m.p.h., his promotional team said. He steers with a gentle turn of his head and arms. Jetman has already traversed the English Channel and the Alps, but he ended up in the waves when he tried to cross the Straits of Gibraltar in November 2009."

Just returned from an intense three day trip to Curacao. There was scooter free diving in the morning and kiting in the afternoon. Great filming but not a time to make a mistake. I was going to circumnavigate the small island but figured to call it a a day after I got the shots and circle back south around to the western lee side where the boat was anchored. I covered about a mile in heavy seas and strong winds on the windward side and a mile in flat calm waters in the lee or the southern half of the island. Interestingly, the really strong gusty winds were to the lee of the island through wind shadow/rotor. The whole island is just 1.5 miles long. Complete writeup with lots of shots and video on the main island of Curacao and KC to come soon. Projects are piling up!

Brett from Tobago and I ran out to Alligator Lighthouse about 4 1/3 miles off the Moorings in Islamorada. We were using new, as of yet unreleased 2012 Cabrinha gear being offered for demo at the Pryde Group Dealer meeting underway at the Moorings. I had mounted a GoPro on the kite and was also wearing one on my helmet. There is an article coming out in Kiteboarding Magazine on the camera-kite setup and other considerations for using GoPro while kiting. GoPro recently picked this shot as "Photo of the Day," so why not put it up here as well? I have a couple of dozen Lighthouse shots, many more actually but this one does pick up the water colors and lighting well.

There is some history in this shot. Alligator Lighthouse was constructed here in 1873 over 50 years after its namesake struck here. There are six lighthouses along the Florida Reef Tract bordering the Florida Keys miles offsho...re constructed from 1822 on. The Florida Current, often mistakenly identified as the Gulfstream in this area, rips north at a good clip. Southbound shipping would run as close to shore as feasible to avoid maximum current in deeper water offshore. The bottom shoals rapidly from deep water to the reef tract which can be exposed in areas at low tide. Between frequent summer and cold front squalls and tropical storms, numerous vessels blown on to the reef over the centuries. Salvors working out of nearby Key West at one time made it the richest city in the USA. The lighthouses were constructed as an aid to navigation and to try to reduce loss. More about the lighthouses at: http://www.reeflights.org/history_of...eef_lights.htm

http://www.keyshistory.org/USS-Alligator.jpg
The USS Alligator
http://www.keyshistory.org

The schooner of war, USS Alligator had some interesting times too. It was commissioned by President Monroe in 1820 to suppress the slave trade in Western Africa. It was the shifted to suppression of piracy in the Straits of Florida and nort...hern Caribbean in 1822. Pirates were running rife plaguing shipping in the area at the time. The ship fought a successful action off Matanzas, Cuba but its Captain was killed in the exchange. The ship then sailed in convoy from Cuba bound for Norfolk, Virginia. The 83 ft. schooner had a whopping draft of 11 ft. with the waters of the reef tract in the area being 5 ft. or less. The ship struck the reef in the night in 1822 and was kedged to attempt to haul her off in the morning. The line parted and she blew further on to the reef. Despite shifting weight overboard and to a Bahamian salvor the vessel floundered hard aground. The men were shifted to another naval brig and the vessel torched to avoid salvage by pirates. Powder stores detonated and the vessel exploded. You can dive the remains today.

Rick,

That water looks extremely calm for being able to kite all the way out there. What size kite/board combo were you on? I went out there once, one long thigh burning tack. The seas that day were much more rough!

ricki 06-21-2011 02:19 PM

It was fairly calm unlike some other times I headed out there. The photo is of the shallow area around the light though. In deeper areas inshore it did bump up a bit. Still I was on a 12 m and didn't have to sine that much. I was on the largest demo tt I could find on the beach before deciding spur of the moment to head out, a 140 cm I think. I yelled at Brett on an inbound tack as I was riding out to see if he wanted to go, it was casual! We did have to tack upwind a few times nearshore returning. I usually take the largest board I have out to the lighthouse to improve performance in the lulls and going upwind in fewer tacks. I normally start about six mile further north making returning a tack fest at times. One time the wind eased and was already from a poor direction. I ended up covering about 38 miles making about 350 ft. to 500 ft. upwind for each half mile tack. It went on forever!

Going through about 60 G of images now from the 2012 Pryde Group Americas Dealer Meeting in Islamorada, FL. I am working on the first article now. Here are a few early ones from the lot ...

Matt Collins ripping on the new Transport directional kiteboard. I really like this raceboard and plan to get one once available. The Moorings resort in the background was our event site, a magnificent one at that too!

Paula taking an idea from the movie "Strange Brew" tries to put a snake in a beer bottle. Why? To get more beer of course! Actually she likes snakes and was communing with this temporarily lost "squirm" as he wriggled through the grass.
