I have been speaking with Mark Barnett in Oz about this rescue, riding in 50 kt. winds and 13 m (40 ft. plus waves), his family of Olympic divers and more. He an incredible waterman riding in some intense conditions off NSW, Australia. Look out for an illustrated article here and perhaps in a mag. soon.
I suspect that one or both of the surfers would have been injured and the waverunner/inflatable boat damaged or lost but for the exertions and unique talents of Mark in some particularly narly conditions. This guy adds new meaning to the term "waterman." Details to follow but take it on faith for now if you will.
By the way, I understand that Shannon Best heard about Mark's heroic exploits and is sending him a replacement kiteboard as a reward.
