Sounds like the hip resurfacing is the way to go - if he's a proper candidate for it. Depends on how much damage has been done to the joint. A friend of mine does a lot of these type surgeries. A lot of them are in "younger" individuals who have been pretty active in their lives. He operated on Tim Taylor of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who I believe is 37, and he's doing great. Can't play at the level required for pro hockey but can do everything else he wants to do. The traditional "total hip replacement" is usually what older individuals require due to the extent of the osteoarthritis (normal wear and tear arthritis as opposed to rheumatoid and other autoimmune types), and the extent of bone density loss when they get into their sixties and seventies.
