Default The Quest Continues

WASSON’S WINNING WAYS
June 11 saw 38 riders duel it out in the fourth night of the 2009 Cabrinha Race Series. Wind started out 19-29 then faded a bit to 14-24 with some holes appearing on the course during the 3rd race. There was still a flood for the first race with most of the riders on 10s and 11s.

Chip Wasson (Ozone) continues his quest to join the likes of Anthony Chavez (Naish) and Jeff Kafka(Cabrinha) as a Cabrinha Race Series Champion. Chip, riding a new stick (version2) from Mike Z again dominated the scoring with three bullets to lead all racers with 3 pts.(1,1,1). Stefaans Viljoen (OR), continues to step it up and finished second overall with a total of 7 pts.(3,2,3). Shawn Richman (Wainman Hawaii), always competitive and riding a borrowed board from Donny was in town and finished third with 14 pts.(2,6,6) followed by Jeff Kafka (Cabrinha) also with 14 pts.(6,4,4) and Adam Vance with 16 pts.(4,9,3). Special note for the evening was youngster Alex Smith (RRD) with a sixth overall, 17 pts.(9,3,5)

All three races were similar, seeing Chip, Steffaans, Kafka Vance and Richman ahead at the windward mark., with Chip taking over on the downwind leg except for Richman who seemed a bit faster on this leg. The first race saw Chip beating Shawn at the finish by a board length.

In the second and third races, John Gomes (Cabrinha) joined the group at the windward mark, would then be overtaken on the downwind leg and then recapture a spot or two on the upwind leg to the finish with a 5,7 in the last two races. Also, noteworthy, Shawn Richman broke a fin completely off just after the start of race two and completed races 2 and 3 with only ONE fin…remarkable skill. Also remarkable, Donny beat Sandy in all three races

Race night #5 this Thursday, June 25. we will announce the winners on the first mini series of the year and also have a free raffle after racing at the St. Francis. There are several protest that need be be heard in order to final the standings….Headington, Segura, Vance have all asked for redress. Also expect to be join again by Shawn Richman and Paolo Rista (Cabrinha) form Paia, Maui.

The Cabrinha Race Series is sponsored by Cabrinha, Ozonetravel, Adventure Sports Miami, and hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club
