I'd recommend hitting some of the free lessons put on by local shops. They bring a bunch of different boards that you can try out for free. For example:
In Deerfield (Saturdays at 7:00 a.m.):
Island Water Sports
In Pompano (Sundays at 8:30 a.m.):
Surf World
In Fort Lauderdale (Demo Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.):
Pure Surf Life
