If you're looking for just a top, I highly recommend the Neil Pryde Heat Seeker. I wear mine for much of the year. In the summer it keeps you cool and helps to avoid sunburn and in the cooler months I think it has reduced the time that I wear a wetsuit by about 2 to 3 months. It isn't a simple rash guard, the material is different and works in my experience.

You will still want a wetsuit, perhaps a full 3/2 for the colder days. Then again if you favor short sessions you can probably get away with less. I have frozen my butt off with a full 4/3 off Islamorada in a powerful cold front. Then again, I like to go for five to six hours plus as a rule if conditions are good. Hypothermia sucks, best to avoid it if you can.
