Here is one from an unexpected late day kiting session today. Thermal winds will come up, largely outside of forecast winds here. They will also turn off suddenly at times. Tonight the winds went just over 20 knots and I had my 17 m Contra along. It worked out but it does call for extra care, also I have been routinely riding with extra power for well over ten years. I went underwater for a few kite-powered submerged tows. Need to bring a mask next time! Later on, if I hadn't noticed a slight cooling in the wind and slow easing in speed, I likely would have had to self-rescue tonight instead of riding the last fairly suddenly side offshore puff into the beach.

Getting ready to slide under the water.

Passing close over a rubble artificial reef. Need to bring a mask next time.

The wind was strong for a while building up over time, then it suddenly fell off a cliff when it shifted side offshore. I noticed some signs just before it shifted and so moved into shore rapidly. I just missed having to self-rescue fortunately for me. It is a good idea to pay attention to conditions.
