Tampa 1st day. Fort DeSoto Big Beach.
Hi all.
Just moved to Tampa (Davis Island) from Baltimore until the end of January. Had a great session at Big Beach today at DeSoto from about 1 until 4. Noticed most of the other kites were up at North Beach. Any particular reason? Waves didn't seem bigger when I went up to check it out. Anyway, looking forward to meeting the locals! Also, any place close to downtown Tampa to ride something with east in it? AntiAntiCamper (Mark) |

Hi Mark,
There are plenty of spots to ride an easterly. Will someone on here give mark the link to all riding spots in the area? Ft. Desoto has a beach called east beach that can be riden on ne to s There is also a rest stop north bound on the sunshine skyway and a few other spots near downtown st.pete. You got here at the right time of year, welcome! Danny |

North Beach has a big sandbar that extends out quite far. It lines the waves up quite nicely especially on a hard NW cold front. That bar gives some organization to things and gets it started on the outside. Again, epic wave riding for the Gulf on a strong NW.
Big Beach doesn't have the bar, so it is more or less disorganized shore break. With it being so north, you may not notice much of a difference between the two, however, when the NW is on, I think you will. Welcome. And yeah, not much riding near Tampa on an East. Gotta get to the other side of the bay as Danny mentioned. |
