Kayak For Charity Event This Saturday

Not much wind in the forecast, at least for the southeast. Why not get on the water and do some good at the same time?

This is an adventurous 15 mile kayak for charity trip down the Intra-coastal Waterway from Riviera Beach to Lake Worth to benefit Palm Beach County Reef Rescue and Shake-A-Leg Miami. Kayakers have friends, family, and associates sponsor them monetarily for the event, much like a walk-a-thon. Tools and support will be provided to make these individual’s efforts a success and a safe event. Kayaks, paddles, and life jackets are provided to those who do not have their own. We had 30 kayakers last year and expect at least 60 this year.

BENEFICIARIES OF THE EVENT

Reef Rescue - The watchdogs of our coral reefs and coastal environment in southeast Florida. Formed by a group of Palm Beach County divers in 2003, their ranks now include divers and non-divers alike. Southeast Florida’s reefs are threatened by a host of stressors from coastal development, agriculture runoff, ocean sewage disposal, siltation and pollution. By focusing on specific, manageable problems and backed by sound science Reef Rescue is making a difference. They have been successful in compelling the regulatory community to enforce the “Clean Water Act” and other environmental statutes designed to protect our fragile and vulnerable coral reef ecosystems. Shake-A-Leg Miami – This is a fantastic organization that works with socially, mentally, and physically handicapped children in a marine environment, utilizing the ocean and waterways to teach environmental lessons, therapeutic sailing and swimming, with specially outfitted vessels to allow the physically handicapped access to the water. In Dade County they cater to over 3000 kids and young adults per year. They want to start replicating their unique and highly successful programs here in Palm Beach County by this summer. Good stuff!!! Their programs look to be VERY successful and really making a difference in the lives of those kids! I also checked out the Waterman Challenge site where Kevin Horgan paddled 175 miles lat year on a SUP to raise awareness and funding for these programs.
Truly remarkable and inspirational!

You're welcome Steve. I almost called these guys about the possibility of including Standup in the fundraiser. Figured it was too last minute and put my self in the shoes of the logistics organizer. They are worthwhile causes too. Hope some kiters check it out with kayaks while we wind wait. Looks strong today though, it is already gusting to gale force at Jupiter.
