The THIRD Jupiter kiteboarding competition is slated to kickoff day after tomorrow. I just spoke with Jeremy of Jupiter Kiteboarding, the event organizer, and wanted to pass on some information from him.

1. It is hard (impossible?), to have a fixed schedule for an event like this given all the variables.

2. The tentative start of the wave and free riding competition is at 10:00 am Friday morning and earlier if possible.

The comp. will start as soon as there are enough guys registered and rigged up. GET TO THE LAUNCH EARLY (8 am?), Jeremy will be there at dawn he tells me to sign guys up. IF you don't arrive early the parking may well be gone along A1A requiring you to walk your gear in 1/2 mile or more.

3. ALL riders are required to have a kite leash (that works) and a means of flagging your kite (regular leash and/or O'Shit variety).

4. NOTE: IF ANY KITES BLOW INTO THE ROAD, A1A, THE RIDERS WILL BE INSTANTLY DISQUALIFIED!

(Last year Jeremy tells me two kites flew into the road when the suicide leashes broke in powered conditions. Broken leashes don't count so prepare well.)

We are honored to have a panel of top riders as judges this year including:

Neil Hutchinson
Damien Leroy
Greg Norman
Jon Modica

These guys kick butt on the water and in the air.

NOTE: ALL FOUR JUDGES are recovering from broken bones suffered while kiteboarding. I hope George with Kiteflix.com will capture some insights and hard won knowledge from these talented riders on tape about grabbing the stoke while reducing the odds of injury. Heal fast guys and thanks for making this event a reality.

The forecast is as follows for Jupiter north to Cocoa:

THURSDAY NIGHT
NORTHEAST WINDS 15 TO 20 KNOTS. SEAS 5 TO
7 FEET. INTRACOASTAL WATERS CHOPPY.

FRIDAY
NORTHEAST WINDS 15 TO 20 KNOTS. SEAS 5 TO 7 FEET.
INTRACOASTAL WATERS CHOPPY.

FRIDAY NIGHT
EAST WINDS 15 TO 20 KNOTS. SEAS 3 TO 4 FEET.
INTRACOASTAL WATERS CHOPPY.

SATURDAY
SOUTHEAST WINDS 10 TO 15 KNOTS. SEAS 2 TO 3 FEET.

SUNDAY
SOUTH WINDS 15 TO 20 KNOTS. SEAS 3 TO 4 FEET. CHANCE OF
SHOWERS.

Looking at the map ...

Northeast wind, forecast for Friday, is approaching an onshore direction here. Riders will need to work away from shore as best they can and take pains to avoid getting launched on to the beach in the middle of tricks. Judges will not be judging for injuries.

Southeast wind is more sideshore but south wind forecast for Sunday is slightly side offshore. Jeremy tells me it can do wonders for the waves which should be rolling in pretty well by then. The wind will likely be gusty however given the fairly high coastal ridge along there.

The wind will probably depart a bit from the forecast as usual, so fingers crossed.
