Has been around for three and a half years on that and in other forums. Easy to put in updates via net phones from the beach. Not all that active because ... ? Twitter, phone ap's or through whatever tech dejour, all that is needed is user input from the beach and all is good.

Rick.. I am thinking that there needs to be something that even low-tech users can benefit from. I have a fancy new blackberry and its web app is pretty crappy at best. (I have an Ipod touch at home and its web browser functionality is 10 times better)..

that being said.. I think we need something that will send an alert out to those that want to be alerted instead of those that come looking for updates.

I can watch the wind all day if I sit at my pc and keep hitting refresh.. I have missed a number of sessions because I have been at home doing day to day chores/work/call of duty mele/etc and did not notice that there was some movement in the trees...

If there was an email distribution group that was setup and someone at the beach posted a quick update "Its going off at Skyway!" .. then I would have put down my PS3 controller and jumped in my car w/ my gear.

anyone familiar with setting up a mailing lists?

There are lots of ways of doing it. Looking into some approaches now. Still, the limiting factor is folks uploading wind info, hopefully accurate stuff too. If we build it, will they come? One way to find out I guess.

looks like some wind might be coming Thursday according to the forecast! If I head out, I will post an update about conditions here in FKSA.... also if I come in between sessions I will post an update. Might be a little something tomorrow morning too...

one approach is up ...

I am not sure how well this will work but checkout http://fksa.org/forumdisplay.php?f=130

Part of the problem is vBulletin is so powerful, full of features that I am not aware of many of them. Anyway, I've set up one approach that might serve ... or not! Anyway, pools open, lookover the instructions and let's give it a whirl if you want to. There are dozens of different ways of doing this, this is just one.

Bryan and others

iKitesurf has a email alert system built in for its members.

You choose what sensors you want to watch, how often you want them checked, and at what wind speed you want an email alert triggered.

It's pretty sweet IMO, but it does not make up for innaccurate wind sensor activity. I use the Egmont sensor for East winds and the Clearwater sensor for West winds. I have them both set for 12mph.

The only bummer is with my iPhone, there is no sound when an email arrives. I still have to check it manually.

I agree, that an email alert would be best, however, I have found text alerts to be able to reach the widest audience. Regardless if you phone is internet capable, even low cost phones get text messages and at the lowest cost. I have ditched my land line due to the low cost and convenience of text messaging. Its like email on the go.

I am interested to see how this idea develops. I have set up a text group on my iPhone for all of my students. It currently is 55 strong and took some time to set up. I can send a text to all of them rather simply, but it does take my phone awhile to do it. A great communication tool. I have always wondered if mass texting can be done through the internet, I imagine it would be much faster. I haven't found anything.

Whatever gets set up, make sure Randy knows whats going on as he is out there all the time.

Default site up next week!

I have been developing a site that is geared towards exactly what everyone has been talking about in this thread. Just talked with my friend who is a web designer. We will have the site up by the beginning of next week. The template is going to be very user friendly and will keep everyone from missing sessions or making long trips to the beach only to get skunked! Stay tuned for more info!

Steve O go into settings - sounds - new text message and change it from none to the tone you want to hear when you get a text message.

Email. Doesn't warn me when one arrives. Got to check it manually. Wish ikite had text alert.
