Fuertaventura, Spain, - TWO one week stays for four people within 30 minutes of kitebeach including an EcoTour!

Parques Holandes is a small complex of "town" houses (apartments set over 2 floors) set within well maintained gardens, it's a quiet sleepy kind of place, ideal if you are looking for rest and relaxation. There is a minimarket, and restaurants, all within a few minutes walk. Only 5 minutes by car are the Grandes Playa, some of the best beaches in Europe, with spectacular sand dunes. The main one is Flag Beach which caters for kite and windsurf - join experts from all over the world and test your skills to the limit.

Outside
Patio with table, chairs and barbecue, gardens and communal pool.

Travel
Car and taxi journey from airport takes 20 minutes. If a taxi is needed we can arrange one. Although not essential, car hire is recommended. An hourly bus service (main road bus stop) stops at the beaches and Corralejo.

Further details
Although the second largest of the Canary Islands Fuerteventura was, until recently, a relatively unknown holiday destination, but visitors can still get away from it all - especially to the miles of uncrowded sandy beaches, undoubtedly the most enthralling features of the island are the magnificent sand dunes. Schools cater for all windsurfing abilities, the main one is Flag Beach Windsurf Centre which is a 10 minute drive from Parque Holandes. 15 minutes drive away is the bustling resort of Corralejo, where there is a very good selection of resort amenities, including many varieties of restaurants from Chinese to Mexican with fast foods and traditional Tapas bars. Fuerteventura is some 60 miles off the north West African coast which means a temperate climate, little rain and long hours of sunshine.

Flag beach is in the north of Fuerteventura on the road driving out of Corralejo. The wind is predominantly cross-shore and Flag beach is the start of some 6-7 km of white sand, where we have about 3 km for kitesurfing. The best months for kitesurfing are March to November. This is when the sea tends to be flat and the wind consistent. During the winter months it can become too wavy and though it might be good.

It is premature to submit a complete summary at this time as people still need to be interviewed and information evaluated. Some of the currently available, PRELIMINARY information follows:

Claudio, at about 180 lbs. was out riding for about 15 to 20 minutes with a 12 m Inflatable kite around midday on New Years Eve. Wind was almost onshore at an average speed of about 20 mph and gusting between approximately 15 to 25 mph by one source. Wind speed observations are still being researched. He may have performed a small transition jump nearshore to change direction when he was caught by a gust and blown from the water while in mid air, on to shore. He fell on impact and tumbled forward apparently inducimg a kite loop that pulled him inland. As he moved futher inland the kite started to rise to the zenith. At about this time he came up to a dead tree, his kite lines may have been guided by the branches of this dead tree as he was pulled upward into the tree. He was momentarily caught in the tree with his kite flying overhead. Another kiteloop may have ensued launching him up through and out of the approximate 35 ft. high tree. He then passed behind cover of brush as he left the tree blocking the view of one observer. He was found shortly after this by another kiteboarder on the ground. Claudio may have moved following the impact, in the numbing shock of the accident, potentially aggravating his injuries. The entire accident was estimated to have happened within a 15 second interval. Emergency services were called and he was taken to a hospital. Additional details will be included in the summary once the available information has been collected and evaluated.

Remember in kiteboarding, distance is your friend. Many kiteboarders frequently ride near shore despite this simple fact. Sometimes bad things happen and a good buffer zone can be a God Sent in potentially sparing you from serious injury.

Claudio was severely injured for only doing what many other riders routinely do and may likely be seen doing at many launches next weekend. That doesn't make it advisable or safe however. This is a good time to reevaluate how you ride. More ideas along those lines appear HERE

Ideas about possible ways of avoiding this accident and several other recent severe kiteboarding accidents worldwide, appear at: HERE

Claudio was hospitalized with:

- Paralysis in both legs below the knee
- A broken back
- A skull fracture
- 6 broken ribs among other injuries.

He regained consciousness after about two weeks and had his respiration tube removed after about 18 days in hospital. He is currently speaking and had some sensation below his knee.

Your prayers, thoughts and donations for Claudio are sincerely appreciated. We are pulling for Claudio to have a complete recovery and restoration of his abillity to walk. Your support is very important in this process. Thank you.

I received an update on Claudio this evening. He has been moved to a group ward in the rehabilitation unit of the hospital. He may be discharged in one to two months due to his lack of insurance. He will be required to return for regular physical therapy when he is discharged.

He can move his legs together and is showing some neural activity in his quadriceps muscles. This last point is encouraging for further improvement hopefully leading to restored muscle control. There has been no news of his ability to move his lower legs. Claudio is still healing with regard to his head and rib injuries.

He is engaged in painful and tiring physical rehab currently. Claudio is DETERMINED to work hard through the therapy as he is committed to recovering muscle control and mobility. It is a very trying, painful and slow process. We wish him the very best in swift progress along this difficult path.

Claudio would like to be admitted to the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, more at: http://www.miamiproject.miami.edu/

The Miami Project is a well funded, leading institution in the fight to aid victims of paralysis. It isn't open to all applicants but we sincerely hope that Claudio's application will be accepted. Your prayers and positive thoughts in this regard would be sincerely appreciated.

We are ramping up to the next benefit for Claudio, leading up to the South Beach Benefit parties and a raffle. Your participation in this would be very much appreciated. Information on the raffle and current product donations appear at: HERE

It would be good for Claudio to hear from his friends in the kiteboarding community via email. He is limiting actual visitors currently so that he can focus his limited energy upon his rehabilitation therapy. Please send an email of support to Claudio if you will to: fly@kitefury.com

Thank you for your concern and positive thoughts.

I received an update from Luco about Claudio last night. Claudio is to be released from the hospital on February 19, 2005!!!

He will need to return for physical theraphy four times a week but at least he will be able to go home. I understand that he is impatient to head home and continue to heal. The physical rehab sessions are going a bit better as well and aren't taking some much out of him. He has regained some weight and is starting to look more like "Claudio" again. He was able to raise both legs about one foot off the bed while lying down. He still can't move his legs below the knee but is working hard to progress on all fronts on the road to recovery. With time and persistance amazing things can happen.

Thanks to everyone for their donations and concern. Remember the SoBe party coming up on March 25, 2005 and the raffle.
