Default XRated Xtreme Downwinder - Where to go and how to see it

The 48 hour notice has gone up and the forecast is holding. A world record kite race this Saturday looks like a GO! It should be fairly intense with a 30 kt. gusting to gale force the night before to build the seas up to around 10 ft., followed by a balmy 20 to 25 kts. NE the day of the race. Dress well as a high of 72 F is predicted along with some nice WIND.

We're talking around 60 miles of pure wave and wind filled bliss, with FIFTY KITERS hell bent for leather racing to Tiki Beach in Ft. Lauderdale. Of course there will be all the extreme high wind and wave hazards along with a LONG grueling run. Riders may finish the run inside three hours while many may take several hours longer. You can read about the 65 mile pre-race at:

http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=3057

We had gusts to 35 kts. and seas to 15 ft. on that leisurely slide down the coast.

If you want to checkout the race and root the guys on, PLEASE DO! The launch will be at Kite Beach in Jupiter, at shower #10. We're planning on a riders meeting at 8:30 am Saturday, December 9, 2006 with a race start at 9:30 am sharp. CLICK HERE FOR MAP

It will look something like this only with about SEVEN times more kites and hopefully clear, sunny weather. It should be quite a sight.

The finish will be at the south end of Ft. Lauderdale beach, just east of Bahia Mar at Tiki Beach shown below:

CLICK HERE FOR MAP Tiki Beach is just east of where Seabreeze Blvd. meets A1A and due north of South Beach Park.

Where to watch the race? Well, virtually anywhere along the shorelines in SE Florida. You could be there for the start. Jump in your car, leap frog down to say Lake Worth Pier or to the park at Boynton Inlet.

NOTE: You will have to head away from A1A along the beach via Blue Heron Blvd. out to I-95 or Federal Hwy. to go around Palm Beach Inlet. You can head back to the beach road, A1A on Okeechobee Blvd. in West Palm Beach. A1A works for the rest of the way.

We all need to pass by some nearshore buoys at the south end of Delray Beach, a few hundred feet south of Casurina St. and Anchor Park. So, that would be another good vantage point for the mid portion of the race.

You could leap ahead to the pier in Deerfield or in Lauderdale By-The-Sea.

The leading riders may arrive at Ft. Lauderdale between 12 and 1 pm given a 9:30 am start. There may be two and even three clumps of riders with smaller groups scattered throughout. Guys may arrive a few hours after this time and perhaps not at all by kite if gear breaks or they decide to call it a day.

This is the largest race of this kind in South Florida ever. So, join in and root the kiters along!

This was taken close to the start of the Pre-Race. Tomorrows seas may look similar.

This is what's rolling in from the north.
