Default Brooke Thabit, Ambassador For Red Bull Wings For Life

Brooke Thabit, a very active surfer and diver suffered serious spinal injury from a surface diving accident. She has been named an Ambassador for the Red Bull Wings For Life World Run, a very worthy cause. Too many people, athletes, kiters and surfers among them suffer from spinal cord injury and all the loss of mobility and changes to life that it can bring. On the order of 130,000 people per year have spinal cord injuries. This cause is devoted to finding a cure.

Here is Brooke's story, click the photo below for video:

What is the Red Bull Wings For Life?

"Our mission

SPINAL CORD INJURY MUST BECOME CURABLE

Wings for Life is a not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation. Our mission is to find a cure for spinal cord injury. We fund world-class scientific research and clinical trials around the globe aimed at healing the injured spinal cord."

"Brooke Thabit and pro surfer Jamie O'Brien tell us why we should all enter the WfL World Run 2014.

I think the work being done by Wings for Life is really amazing and there’s definitely a cure right around the corner. This foundation gives me and a lot of other people with spinal cord injuries a lot of hope."

Brooke was interviewed by TV News 12 about her life, the accident and moving forward with things like the Red Bull Wings For Life towards a cure.

"Paralyzed surfer driving inspiration behind South Florida Wings for Life World Run
Story by John Evenson / CBS 12 NEWS

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Brooke Thabit is still coming to terms with being paralyzed in a freak accident a year and a half ago. But the 18-year-old former sponsored surfer from Boca Raton is a driving force behind the first ever Wings for Life World Run, raising money for spinal cord research.

"They are so close to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries it's ridiculous," said Thabit.

Thabit dove off a friends dock into unexpected shallow water on the Labour Day weekend in 2012, and the damage to her spinal cord left her as a quadriplegic. "I didn't even want to look at myself in the mirror," says Thabit, "I was like how can my life change so fast in 5 seconds, and then you just kind of learn how to adapt to it."

Brooks' version of adapting is still taking part in extreme sports like sky-diving, and being the ambassador for the Wings for Life World Run, a run that will take place at the same time in 35 countries spanning the Globe.

"Walking again is eventually the end goal," says Thabit, "and we might only need to do one of these events and have a cure."

Brooke is at it again, this time sky diving with the Red Bull team from a helicopter. What a great experience Brooke, thanks for leading the way and sharing!
