Been talking about helmets recently. No assurance a helmet would have avoided the injuries this rider suffered. As one wasn't in use, we'll never know.

One thing is for sure, better weather awareness likely would have avoided the entire accident. This was in 2002, the word was still going around on weather to avoid. Still today in 2010, there is an unacceptable degree of unawareness and/or lack of appreciation for the hazards posed by squalls.
