Default Matheson Hammock Launch Area, Miami

Matheson is a very popular and at times crowded launch area. One of the few in Miami that provides readily accessible calm water with nearby parking. Threats to access have occurred over the years here. Kiters need to follow the rules, see below and manage the density of riders as best they can.

BE SURE to observe the no jumping and riding zones. They exist for very good reason, built upon hard past experience involving injuries.

The launch area

AVOID using this launch with turbulent winds from land shadow. That is wind coming from anywhere near and to the west of that line. Guys have been hurt at this launch and more than once by winds to the left of this line.

Listen To Rick everyone,
The past couple of weeks it got crowded and alot of people are jumping and riding before the white buoys at Onshore winds.
Lets be safe and have some great sessions to tell during the strong season that is approaching.
Thanx for the reminder!!!
-Danny

Default 2007 RULES FOR MATHESON

THE TITLE OF THIS POST LOOKS APPEALING, BUT THE RULES HAVE NEVER CHANGED. LET'S PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING...

When launching and landing your kite it MUST be done beyond the white buoys.

EVERYONE should connect kite lines on land, roll up lines on the bar, and proceed to walking beyond the white buoys for launching the kite.

If you can't do this alone, ask for some one to WALK with you.

On behalf of myself and anyone with BIGKITE, there will be NO EXCEPTIONS for launching and landing kiters on onshore winds.

I believe the idea behind this is simple...

Regards and happy kiting to everyone.

Always ask for help. I'll never say NO.

Miguel Clavero

Another thing...

When you are learning to ride especially. Be aware of the following,

1.) Stay far away from the launch area , go out past the flags. way past the white buoys. Space is your friend, and let the other riders get off shore and ride, dont clog the landing area.

2.) Respect the locals, ask them what is going on where to ride, dont just show up and ride without checking. Many people at Matheson such as Tim Miguel, Bella and others have devoted a great amount of time and effort to keep this spot open and useable. Including setting up important guidelines and rules, respect what they tell you. They are keeping this spot working for you. They do far more than you know behined the sceens.

3.) This is considered a rather advanced spot to ride. yes it has flat water but you have often gusty conditions onshore, shallow water, stingrays, sea urchins, exposed sandbars, While the conditions can be easy the access is not so respect this spot.

4.) Watch out for the deep water channel on the inside toward the mangroves I am sure landing on a multimillion dollar lawn will not help any cause we may have at matheson.

5.) Stay out of the boat channel by the swim area to the far right of matheson. Lots of traffic current no need to bother the police boats and traffic that runs through there.

6.) Dont litter and leave your junk on the rocky launch if you see trash pick it up, leave it cleaner than when you arrived there are trashcans.

That is all - Ian

Any new tips on Matheson? Is the crowding getting worse still? Do people walk far enough from shore to launch and land. This would be in a effort to try to avoid repeating what Alex Caviglia went through and the fellow about a week ago?
