Eager to return home after a week's fishing trip, the captains of two boats decided to risk crossing Grey River despite the choppy waters. The current and waves were so strong it was almost impossible for either of the boats to advance.

Ray Haywood, crewman on one of the vessels, said: "The only thing that happened there was the big run in the river. If you've got ten knots of water running at you and the boat will only do eight knots, you just don't go forward at all."
Ray Burge from The Auckland Coast Guard said the fishermen were lucky to have made the crossing unharmed. He said: "They've got a risk of the boat being turned sideways and once that happens it's pretty easy to tip them over."
