Just spoke to Jesse, they're pulling things together for the race Sunday morning. The course layout is being finalized and will be put up on here if possible before the race if possible. Captain's meeting starts at 9 am sharp, should be fun!

Default Writeup for Cocoplum 500

Cocoplum 500 At Shake A Leg, Report by SUJ--

Sunday morning, Fathers Day, dawned very still and flat…wow, this would be a first for one of the races in the Hobie Standup Series where it is normally blowing a gale or something slightly less than that! The course was altered from the original format of doing a circumnavigation of Cocoplum due to potential weed problems to a straight shot up the Coral Gables Waterway from Shake A Leg. In the end the weeds were not a problem at all due to west wind in Miami which had blown all the weed over to Key Biscayne, so everybody was ready to rock shortly after ten am. The guys who looked fast were the guys who were fast….Chip Bock and his 18 foot Custom Bark, winner of the MYC event and James Brown on his 14 foot very light something or other had the quick lead after the first turn around Island C. Thad Foote started out very strong and shot out into third place, with Hollywood Jesse Cors actually up in 4th at one point early on. At this point, after Jim DeSilva challenged Jesse for 4th, Jesse decided to make a “contribution” to the marine environment which had something to do with all the wine he drank the night before….Jesse retired from this one, and Tyler Bixby, also of Liquid Surf and Sail, took over his spot. Meanwhile, first time SUP Racer Meredith Bass of Shake A Leg, a top local area triathlete and Karen Perez, personal trainer, were having a good battle in the ladies.

DeSilva had moved into third by the Waterway, with Thad and JP not far behind. The current was noticeable in the Waterway, so it paid to stay out of the current (far to the edge) as you were going up, and once we made the turn (about 2/3rds of a mile past Tubbs (Miami Vice) House) you wanted to stay IN the current to speed the trip back down. But of course, as always seems to happen at our races now, the lead boats motor died and Chip and James Brown had to guess as to where the mark was….they guessed right and actually waited around for the new mark boat to appear, this was how big a lead they had over the rest of the field. Harry Horgan, supreme guru of Shake A Leg got there, dropped the mark, and those two were GONE, absolutely smoking the rest of the field. DeSilva had opened a good lead over Thad, who had a nice lead over JP and then Tyler Bixby, who had come to the conclusion that the 5 Hour Energy Shot, although good for 2.5 million users every week, does not work too good in a 7+ mile SUP Race. Tyler, always looking for an edge and kind of the Barry Bonds of SUP at this point, is vegetarian, but claimed that the 3 Red Bulls he took before the MYC event last time had propelled him to the front to challenge Roary and the crew, but 5 Hour was not getting it done for him this time, even though it seemed like the race was going to take that long. If Tyler wins in the future we are definitely doing a urine test on him for too much Red Bull or other banned substances….

Bass and Fernandez were having a tight battle but Bass was managing to hold onto a twenty yard or so lead. Fernandez said to this reporter afterwards, “Are all the races this long?” Of course this one was longer than the first two put together(!) and combined with 90 degree plus heat, competitors were starting to fade….except for JP Perez! Perez had come from behind Thad, passed him shortly after the end of the waterway, and was gaining on DeSilva. DeSilva said, “it was like a nightmare where the big bear keeps getting closer and closer, I thought it was going to end with him eating me for dinner.” Although he had closed the distance from over a football field to twenty yards or so, DeSilva held him off in the end to take the 12 foot class, JP second on the C4, Thad third, and Tyler Bixby 4th . Special props to Sergio Mendoza, who, after the first time on the board, decided to enter this grueling contest and did successfully finish the course….if someone had made me paddle 7+ miles on my first few times out I would have died, so this was honestly quite an achievement without any real training. Bass commented that this was, “as grueling as any triathalon, FOR SURE!”.

Results:

Over 12’6 class—Chip Bock 1st, , 1:30:00, James Brown 2nd.

Under 12’6” class—Jim DeSilva—Hobie, 1st, 1:38:00, JP Perez—C4, 2nd, Thad Foote, 3rd, Tyler Bixby—Amundson, 4th

Women—Meredith Bass, 1st,1:57:09, Karen Perez 2nd

See you all in Fort Lauderdale for the 4th Race in the Hobie Standup Series, July 26th, in Fort Lauderdale!!
