Big Boy - Spleene 164?

Any advise, I'm 6'2" 225, actually 235+ w/full gear on-

I have a North Dragon 138 and like it but struggle as I'm still can't go upwind yet. These NE long winters are a killer on the learning curve.

I'm looking at getting a Spleene 164, they seem to get positive reviews.

The 64 Door is an awesome board.

Depending on your personal needs you might do better with a 54 Door or, if you can find one - a 59 Door.

You have my sympathies and I can relate, even at 190 lbs. without gear! One of the greatest barriers to ready advancement along the learning curve can be marginal wind and too small a board size vs. rider weight. I commonly see guys out trying to milk marginal conditions with too small a board and wondering what's up? Bigger can be better!

I have been prone to carry a couple of boards, one for moderate to high winds and one for light winds. I have heard good things about the Spleene but have yet to try one. My current light wind board is effective and even handles well in waves and with higher winds. The last is not recommended but sometimes it goes from light to stronger in short order. It has a smaller board feel as well.

Anyway it is the Underground FLX-XXXL developed between the New Zealand manufacturer and the guys at Extreme Kites in St. Augustine for Florida conditions.

The board measures about 150 cm by 45 cm (midsection) by 1 cm thick tapering to .5 cm at the ends. Despite its appearance you really don't feel the size adversely in the water.

I found a never used '06 Door 164 in the midwest for $585 !

Thanks for your advise boys. I'm looking fwd to riding this. I got the biggest longboard in RI and now add this badboy to the quiver.

I just recieved my Speene 164 Door and have a question.

It came with a pair of 5cm & 4cm fins. On the Door 164 it only has two c/l fins and two heel side fins (no toeside holes), question is; I assume the 5cm go on the heel side and the 4cm fins go c/l ????

And I wonder if anyone out there has drilled some toeside holes for fins?

Awesome!!

You are going to love that board. I was out today in Jupiter with on-side-on 10 kts with 3-4 ft waves, unfavourable current, and riding upwind no problem. Granted I weigh 155# and was using a 17m Waroo...but I was riding AND having fun. The only other person who had any luck today was John Modica riding a small surfboard.

Re: Fins - the big fins go in the center, small fins to the heelside. DO NOT put more fins on the board...that will probably just slow it down. If anything you could reduce fin size to loosen the board up, perhaps even lose the heelside fins altogether...go ahead and experiment, but don't drill any holes yet..

PS...I am borrowing this board from a friend/former student up North...now I hate to give it back

It (the board I mean) does not feel big when you're riding it.
