Free Diving Competition - Ft. Laud., FL 7.25-7.26.09
This just in:
"F.I.I. SPONSORS LOCAL FREEDIVING EVENT!! 2009-07-08 As we all know freediving events in the U.S. are few and far between, so when U.S.A.A. (U.S. Freediving Association - www.usfreediving.org) Freediver Jared Schmelzer decided it was time to organize one in Ft Lauderdale, F.I.I. was quick to respond with an offer of sponsorship assistance. The Gulfstream Open Freediving event will be running from 25th July - 26th July this month. Developing and supporting the local and national freediving community is one of F.I.I.'s top priorities, so we look forward to supporting more events such as this in the future. ...and hey! Here's a few shots from the first day of the competition ...
 Jared describes organization for the event  Martin talks about the pursuit of the highly prized but elusive spackle knife. It only occurs at depth and is not only hard to find but is also can be difficult to hang on to.  Heading out   Free divers are well known for their fondness for smoking, NOT. That is actually a pen.    The free diving rig  A look up at the rig and all the stations for warmup, performance, safety divers, emergency diver recovery  Jared warms up with pull downs   Support craft from South Florida Diving Headquarters, these folks do a great job!  Packing just prior to descent  Martin on the way up from a minor drop (for him!) to 60 m without fins  Martin on the surface with judges Doug and Jon looking on  Jared packs for his 60 m drop  Jared descends    Tech diving gear out the wazoo    Checking the instant replay  Free immersion      Passed through some interesting squalls on the way in
