Understand from Kent this event is going off again in Bimini soon. He thinks the winning boat might nail as many as a 1000 this go round. Getting crowded with lionfish in other words.

Also, ASM is putting on a part in Miami to ramp up for the "Smash" this coming week on July 15, 2010. More details to come soon!

ps - I think it would be good to really promote the culinary side of lionfish, like hogfish only better, etc.. No better way to deal with overpopulation than to make something popular with shooters! If anything would take them down that likely would.

Bimini, Bahamas - On July 17, 2010 the South Florida Freedivers Club are hosting the second annual Lionfish Smash at Bimini Bay Resort and Marina with proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of Miami. This family event has an overall goal to bring awareness of the Lionfish invasion on the Bahamian reefs. The event was created in May 2009 to raise recognition with a sport (spear fishing) that can contribute to a positive ecological cause.

The Lionfish is an invasive and extremely venomous species of the Bahamian archipelago. It's a non-native fish that hails from the Indo-Pacific Region, affecting the biological diversity of Bahamian waters. The South Florida Freedivers Club hope to work in conjunction with the ongoing, long-term National Lionfish Response Project to assist in researching what determines the affects lionfish invasion. The format of the event focuses on the traditional Hawaiian Sling spearfishing and pole-spear method respecting local Bahamian spearfish laws. This is not a contest for the Nationals spearfishing tournaments and is not an Underwater Spearfishing Association (IUSA) sanctioned event.

"We are thrilled with the opportunity to host this family event again in 2010," said Danielle Dunfee Event Manager, Bimini Bay Resort and Marina, The Bahamas. "I'm personally excited to assist in this increasing awareness of the negative effects of the lionfish here in my second home (Bimini). By joining forces and working together we can combat this spread."

The South Florida Freedivers is a grassroots organization focused on bringing together people who utilize the ocean as their playground. Meetings are held every 2nd Thursday at 7:30 PM at Scotty's Landing in Coconut Grove - Miami, Florida. The purpose of these meetings is to put together a group of likeminded individuals who respect and honor the best of the sport; local fishing regulations and practices, selectivity and conservation, and above all diver safety."

I have heard of lionfish being seen in several areas off Broward Country this week. How about putting on one of these competitions on in SE Florida this summer as well? Could do a series, Keys and right up the east coast. Waiting until next year could be a mistake. Lets talk about this at the party tomorrow night in Miami.

Thanks for posting the photo link Patrick. For folks that may not be on facebook or FB friends of ASM (but might now want to be), here are some of the images. I missed out on a great event trying to get ready to head over to the islands myself early the next day. Still more images at: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...id=79211703193

That's the party, NOW how about the event? Should be a great experience!

Good point, they seem to be exploding in population right now off SE Florida. How about a local smash or why not a few of them?
