Default Cory Roeseler and the Kiteski

A video clip of Cory Roeseler in the Gorge in 1987 on his kiteski along with later video from Maui.

Back in the Day, not just any old day either, The Day, there were innovators. Sort of like today only a bit different, as there was no great following, real direction or global impetus. They were the original elves cutting their own path in Santa's T&E toy shop at the North Pole or in this case, the Gorge.

So, let's pickup with Cory Roeseler and his concept (and that of his father William), Kiteski.

Patent Abstract

A wind powered system utilizes a free-flying airfoil tethered to a conveyance device such as a water ski, a skegged hull slab or a wheeled land vehicle which either defines or inherently has tracking means defining a preferred traverse vector across an underlying surface. The tractive force of the airfoil is applied at the center of lateral resistance of the conveyance device such that there is no destabilizing moment caused by the airfoil, thereby removing an artificial limit on the sail area that is imposed upon fixed mast sailing craft. A control bar provides a mount for a tether reel which enables the conveyance device, when same is a kite, to be launched from the water without requiring the assistance of a boat.

I remember seeing one of these in a Toyota Truck TV commercial in the early 1990's. I think Cory was booking along dead downwind in the shallows a few feet off the beach and free wheeling truck. He had this massive arch shaped bar in his hands. It was entirely crescent shaped and didn't resemble anything in this writeup, secret prototype, shhh.

Love that control bar! I took one of these out to my first trip to Maui (a loaner from F One USA's Raphael) along with Trip Forman's old 5 m Wipika two line kite. Hung Vu had come up with an inventive way to attach a kite leash to this thing (no depower, whoops). So I took the parts along to put one of those together too. Good news is the wind was so strong, the "kite bar built like a Schwin" stayed in my suitcase (along with the 5 m). Good thing, I would have felt terrible if the bar dragged by a runaway kite in 45 mph winds decapitate the top of Haleakala or something.

Water launching had a different meaning back then, remember NO emergency depowering! Hey, it just hit me, Nuclear Gorge winds and NO WAY to kill the power in an emergency!? YOW, there must have been some real interesting sessions back then. Came real close to buying one of these from Scott up in Valkerie, FL years back. Was already collecting way too much kite junk. I was on the search for the Holy Grail of Florida Summer Kiting gear, a light wind kite (which didn't exist, hadn't figured that out yet), so I passed.

Cory was and STILL is the man based upon recent speed kiting results. Have fun out there and thanks for all of those great sessions we have had in your wake. Anyone out there try a Kiteski before? How was it?

This was also posted on Facebook and prompted some comments:

Ian Young My first rig in 1997 was one of Cory's Kiteski's :-)

Stein Erik Gabrielsen I got my reelbar in 2000, seemed like a good idea... Fn scary

Rick Iossi Ian, were you able to stay upwind with it? Did you ever have any overpowered issues? Deploying it must have been fun.

Rick Iossi Stein did you rig yours with Hung Vu's depowering setup? As I recall it was some nylon line with some sections of reinforced plastic tubing.

Stein Erik Gabrielsen It was 2 line - no depower. the "safety" was a plastic slider that initiated pinwheel loops. Sold it to a guy for snowkiting

Raul Argilagos I had one of those flying buzzsaws back in '98. I sold it b/c the hydraulics ALWAYS went bad in saltwater after a few times. it was freaky having that thing spinning!

Ian Young Yeah Rick I was able to stay upwind - learned how to edge REAL hard to depower & quite a few times that wasn't enough LOL

Rick Iossi Good to know, I had assumed they were real hard to stay upwind on. The good old days, when edging was about the only depower underway that was available. Who remembers when folks resisted going to kites with chicken loops preferring to use static loops with no depower? I recall one shop that had a wall of severed chicken loops, because ... they were for chickens?!

Where did you first see kitesurfing and when?

My first memory was this Toyota TV commercial that first aired in 1995. I was still windsurfing at the time but was sufficiently intrigued by the spectacle to look into "kiteskiing." What articles I could find at the time led me to mistakenly believe that it was a downwind sport with lots of walking back upwind involved. That and the ponderous appearance of the control bar kept me in windsurfing for a few more years. I got my first Wikipa in 1998 and never looked back, much. Little did I know that there was to be lots of walking backup wind for me with these classic two line kites! Staying upwind in variable conditions didn't become consistently easy for me until my first four line LEI kites, Naish AR5s in 2000.

LOL!
you're not the only one, I think alotta people back in '98 thought the
same thing watching certain individuals do just that across Biscayne Bay...
Luckily rides back across the Rickenbacker were plentiful then

It was trickier to handle down your way with the causeways, extensive seawalls and private development to walk back from downwind runs. It was a lot easier up here with linear stretches of unguarded beaches to work from. I can recall seeing guys stay upwind in 1999 in Maui on two line kites and wondering, how do they do that?! I think the greatest problems were insufficient wind and edging. You used to fly F ones too Raul. What was the most wind you ever took one of the old ATK foils in? Those kites could be severely punishing in major gusts and lulls.

One time I deliberately did a downwinder the last time I flew a XXXL Ram kite on handles. I was about to sell it. The walk back from that carrying a long directional board was 6 1/2 miles! Try that with a windsurfer.

Probably in Hood River , Gorge on a 5m ATK gusting 15-40knots ragdolled me
all the way across the sandspit battered bruised

I got rid of that kite immediately afterwards......

Just came across some new, old clips of Cory in action on all sorts of kite gear, pioneering kitesurfing.

Fun times, good vibes...
We have this crazy bar with the REEL at a local kiteshop hanging on the wall.
You could defend a country with this thing

Without a quick release or leash, you just hung on until you were forced to let it go. That is if you could still unhook it. I bet aluminum "bike" control bar puppy could take the head off a rhino in free flight.
