Default * NEW - Florida Update! *

SBC Kiteboard Magazine prints a regular column, "Florida Update." Please contribute news and ideas for the mag. and visitors to this site.

Things like ...

•How have the conditions been?
•What will conditions be like for the next three months?
•What events (contests, swaps, demos, learn-to-kite nights, socials, premieres) have happened or are about to happen? What were/are the dates? Where was/is the event? Where can people get more information?
•Have there been any epic days in the last few months?
•Who’s killing it?
•What local riders have just been sponsored?
•Who deserves a sponsor?
•Are there any local access issues?
•Are there any new local sliders/kickers? Any new spots?
•Is there anything noteworthy that needs to be mentioned?
•Which local shops are running kiting nights? How have they been going?
•How are the local schools doing?
•Has there been any local media coverage on kiteboarding?
•Do you have any images or know anyone with local images? (Must be high-resolution jpegs or RAW files)

So, jump in the wind and water are fine. Post your news and links to tune us into what's going on, even more importantly, what you'd like to see happen!

The first Florida Update to appear in SBC Kiteboard appears below with links to more information:

"Florida conditions have been good with the passage of normal cold fronts across the peninsula. Frontal winds should continue to bring good riding through the Florida windy season with particularly good winds typically coming through in February and March.

Lots is going on in Florida including:

The recent first ever, Ft. Lauderdale to Bimini Kiteboarding Race.

Kite4Girls for the third year running should be coming off in Miami in March.

The Islamorada Invitational should happen early in the new year as well. Sad to say, not true after all!

The Kitehouse is setting up a new opearation in Turks and Caicos

Ty Luckett starts novel “pole boat” operation in Miami that speeds rider progression through wake style tricks at light speed. (i.e. it’s always a good wind day on the “pole boat!”)

Comments from Red Bull sponsored rider, Susi Mai dispel rumors of Red Bull pulling out of kiting sponsorship with the closing of the King of the Air series. A party was held in her honor by The Kiteshop and Cabrinha on Key Biscayne recently. Susi says Red Bull is still going to be sponsoring kiteboarding events including an all women kiteboarding tour in the new year.

Pat of Extreme Kites in St. Augustine told me that on the weekend of January 6th: Dimitri from Airush is coming up for a demo weekend. He will have all the new 2006 kites and boards that will be available for everyone to try. We will also hold another kite video movie outside our shop on one of the nights. More info, contact our shop.??Past few months: The wind has been good for us in Northeast Florida. Until recently, temperatures remained in the mid 70’s, with lots of good wind. Matanzas Inlet in St. Augustine and Hugenot Park in Jacksonville have remained the most popular spots. On any good day, it is not uncommon to have 20 kiters out at either of the inlets. ??Upcoming Riders:?Ryan “Dude” Mattison: He is leading the wakestyle charge in Northeast Florida. He is basically fearless and you can often see him flying through the air at what seems to be 100 mph, unhooked and coming in hot. He has an aggressive style that comes from a snowboarding and wakeboarding background. He is fun to watch and awesome to hang out with. He rides Aggression boards, and RRD kites

Johnathan Marsh: He is known to throw down big, lofty jumps. Part Old-school, part new school. He usually jumps the highest, and is always on a kite way bigger than everyone else. He also has a smooth style when doing just about everything. He has only been kiting about 2 years, but is one of the best out there. He is also one of the nicest guys on the beach. He rides Slingshot boards, and Flexifoil kites.

You can find out about these Florida events and more by checking out happenings on http://fksa.org/ ."

Here's the second Florida Update that appears in the current issue of SBC Kiteboard Magazine. Links will be inserted into the text below soon!

FLORIDA UPDATE!!!

The windy season is in full swing and riders throughout the state are grabbing great sessions. Pray for good cold fronts and great wind! We have had a number of events with more on the way including the Jupiter Kiteboarding Invasion, the first ever Kite boardercross competition in Florida held in Tampa. Neil Hutchinson of X-RATED KITEBOARDING is organizing the boardercross comps all over. He held one in Miami two weeks ago, will have another in Tampa this weekend followed by still more. These fast, tactical races are exciting to watch and even more fun to ride in. They throw Pros in with regular Joe riders in an event that requires a different style of riding sometimes with surprising results.

Jayson Orkins has organized the Tampa Kiteboard Masters Downwinder which consists of a several hour downwinder race through Tampa Bay of a flotilla of kiteboarders and chase boats. It should be a glorious sight when all those kites go up and race southward to the finish.

Christophe Ribot of Miamikiteboarding is to hold the third annual Kite4Girls event in Miami this March.

Sadly, Brad Lange will not be holding the Islamorada Invitational for the first time in five years. We will sorely miss this epic signature Florida event. Other organizers are thinking about holding events as the windy season continues in the Sunshine State.

Extreme Sports of St. Augustine recently had a great swap meet that was well attended.

Lloyd of Waterboards.net is LOOKING for riders to sponsor. Waterboards has also been donating nifty scale board trophies and full sized boards as prizes for competitions.

Our very own George Saunders of Kiteflixs has released a marvelous DVD, “Aerial Assault” staring Dimitri Maramenides. We’re not talking your little brother’s headbanger video here but a highly entertaining, skillfully edited production by a Pro that has won Oscars (for writing, true story).

Ty Luckett of kitehatteras.net, long recognized Kiteboarding leader from OBX is wintering in Miami with his fully tricked out kite boat. This vessel has an articulated pole that is supposed to have even yours truly throwing moves that here-to-fore I have only done by accident … ouch!

Enrique of SW Florida Kiteboarding is bumping up the effort among riders to preserve access to Tigertail Park on Marco Island, FL. It would be a crime to lose access to this superlative launch for west winds for all of South Florida.

Paul Menta’s Thekitehouse.com has been thriving in Key West, Nassau in the Bahamas and is joined by a new operation in Miami run by Clarissa Hempel and Mike Minichiello.

Mark Rush of pcbkitesurf.com is highlighting the “Forgotten Coast” a rarely visited stretch of shoreline in the Panhandle reportedly last commonly kited by the Seminoles a coon’s age ago.

Wind’s on, ride safe and have fun in Florida!!!
