This just in from Jesse on the race. Some photos are up in Photo Of The Day, (http://fksa.org/showthread.php?t=6089&page=24 ) with a ton more on the way. Got some nice images on this one.

"Hobie Stand UP Series Race #4 Fort Lauderdale

Wow, what an interesting race this was! This was the original course that had been planned by Jesse Cors, event PRO, for the first event in the series, but the course had to be shortened due to a small gale that was blowing that day. Starting with a water start right off Hobie Beach, the race ran down to the Port Everglades inlet, into the inlet, then a big right turn under the 17th Street Causeway Bridge, right turn again past the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club, and into Bahia Cabana for the finish. No gales today though, the wind was almost non-existent but the 90 degree plus heat was in full effect though!

With the promise of free beer afterwards, their was sufficient motivation to get this thing started…..let’s talk about who was riding what for a minute. It seems that the Fort Lauderdale crew, confident in their ability to beat up on all comers, have resorted to riding doors, barges, windsurfers and rescue boards just to humiliate the rest of the people showing up to these events. Rafael Sanchez, with a brand new all carbon Joe Bark, declared before the race that he had the fastest board and could not be beaten (the author is only slightly paraphrasing here). Unfortunately for Rafael, he had not paddled against Roary before, who brought out the classic Bic BeBop windsurfer, complete with empty centerboard slot and mast track removed to get the weight down to around 40 lbs or so, and proceeded to come in THIRD in the 12 foot class. Rafael, you could have gone to a yard sale and gotten one of those for FREE, no need to send Joe three thousand bucks! Then, you had Amanda who was on a rescue board, you know the kind they use at the beach to bring in dead bodies, yeah, she beat ever other woman and most of the guys, (and Rafael), on one of those! WTF?? Are people going to start paddling doors next and winning? These guys are paddling pretty good, no doubt about it. Tyler Bixby, with a loaner Naish Glide from Liquid Miami, was confident of total victory, and managed to lay the smack down on his boss Jim, but could not catch the 3 Amigos up front who took off at the start and could not be seen again. Packet, Jake and Roary were seen in a PELETON at one point, all drafting, coordinating their strokes, right in each others wake….wow, we are going to start showing up in TEAMS from now on. Jim and Tyler, about 30 yards behind these three, pondered a two man Peleton to try to catch up, but ruled out that out when Tyler thought about the logistics of having to rely on Jim to draft, not good. Chip Bock was GONE at the beginning of the race, never to be seen again, except maybe by James Brown, who plowed through the fleet on his 14 footer to take a second, much like the Shake A Leg event. I looked up and it seemed like Chip was a hundred yards in front about a minute after the start, how did he get there?? 18 foot board and big arms, that’s how.

The first leg was in the ocean, in a rolly chop, hardly any wind and Hot as Hell with the air conditioning broken. When you turned the corner into the inlet, you were downcurrent but there were some large waves coming off the 60 footers driving by that hit you once, then hit you again off the seawall, right about the time the next one came from the other direction. This reporter was hit by a 4 footer that was peeling and completely vertical with a pitching lip, dead from the side, I thought I was going in for sure but somehow managed to stay upright (only to fall in dead flat water later for absolutely no reason other than a heat induced stupor)…it was sketchy for sure. Then, after rolling around in this washing machine, it was another right turn under the 17th Street Bridge. The current was RIPPING under the bridge, we went by it going 6 knots easy, and then into the butter flat water over near the Yacht Club….thankfully we were with the current and not into it.

Most of the finishes were fairly serene, the exception being Jim and JP Perez. Much like the Miami event, where JP came from nowhere right behind Jim, the same thing was setting up again. After an unplanned underwater ‘diving’ expedition by Jim, JP had closed to just a few yards behind and was sitting there, lurking, waiting to strike. Jim, remembering the last event, was picking up the pace trying to keep him at bay, but JP was there….waiting….lurking. About 75 yards from the finish, the sprinting started. Jim was trying to work to the left as it appeared this was where the finish was closest. JP got overlapped and then they started banging boards, hard to paddle when you are banging boards, they then separated, but there was still a ways to go. Then, a little more banging, JP is dead even…DeSilva considered a full body tackle at this point but figured he would end up on the wrong side of his board and would still lose…JP by an inch at the line!! DeSilva fell down drunk with heat exhaustion, just in time to watch Amanda come in right behind on a rescue board…..Famous Rap Star and star of Freak Week “Bizzert” was there and ready to race after going out in Miami the week before, but Ilan Neuwirth heisted his board off the beach so Bizzert had to watch….after seeing everbody come in wrecked, he was good with it as he had a show that night anyway and wanted to be fresh. “Man, those people look spent!” said Bizzert, you are correct sir!!

All in all, a very good race, there was lots of beer drinking at Treasure Trove afterwards, thanks to Liquid of Fort Lauderdale for making it all happen! Next race in Miami in a month, race number 6.
