Default Instruction, what should be taught?

Taking a long view of things and coming from diving, hang gliding, I was of the opinion a long while back that kiteboarding instruction needed to include more than "how to turn on and steer the golf cart." My own screw ups, looking over tons of incidents and accidents over the years only have reinforced this conclusion. We need to inform the mind about more than basic operation in this sport in other words. Are we there yet?
