Default OT - Crash At The Sub Races

Just saw this ...

"
$187 million in cocaine found on homemade submarine
> Posted by Liz Doup at 3:32 PM

Drug dealing just sunk to new depths.

The U.S. Coast Guard discovered 7 tons of cocaine on a homemade submarine off the coast of Costa Rica, reports Local 6 news.

On board the 70-foot sub with sophisticated navigation equipment: $187 million in cocaine.

The vessel and the people aboard were on their way to Key West today.

A U.S. Navy airplane spotted the sub. Coast Guard officials said the apparent Colombian drug runners were taken by surprise and four people were taken into custody in international waters.

As for Key West -- we wonder if that party city has ever seen that much coke.

I've heard about these things on and off for a while. With the level of sophistication of off the shelf components, these guys could put together some pretty interesting fish. Then there is always the human element to undo things aside from technical glitches. Do do drugs, even in subs!

Went looking around for better photos and found one, but it's not the same sub. It's a smaller one found off the same coast, almost two years ago.

22 months ago: A Costa Rican police officer guards a homemade submarine packed with 3 tons of cocaine captured by the U.S. Coast Guard off Costa Rica's Pacific coast, is under guard in the Pacific port of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, Monday, Nov. 20, 2006. The 49-foot craft was found Friday, 166 kilometers (103 miles) off Costa Rica's coast near Cabo Blanco National Park on the Nicoya peninsula, according to Costa Rica's Security Minister Fernando Berrocal. Two Colombians, a Guatemalan and a Sri Lankan man were arrested and taken to the U.S., since they were captured in international waters. (AP Photo/Kent Gilbert)

Google "submarine drugs" and you'll get about 2.6 million hits. Looks like quite a bit of this has been going on for a while.
