Cabrinha Race Series-#6

Thirty-One Racers took to the water for night number six of the 2011 Cabrinha Race Series. During warm-ups, 11s/12s seem to be the call, but as the first start drew closer the winds backed off and the racers left the beach with 12-14s in winds that were averaging 14 (13-20)…picking up to 15-16 as the night progressed. Geoff Headington and Joey Pasquali showed up with new boards from NJS and Royal ; Joey looked more comfortable on his new 70 than did Geoff.



Race #1 had three guys attempting a port start wind Ty Reed being way over early and ended with a DSQ… at the windward mark it was Joey, Johnny H and Chip. About halfway down to the leeward mark it was Johnny, Chip, Joey, Andrew Koch taking an inside line while Bryan Lake and Headington taking a more outside line until about 100 yards from the mark. Wind looked a bit lighter at the lee mark. Rounding the lee mark was Johnny H and Chip with Johnny pulling away…in fact he was not only pointing higher, but was sailing faster. At the finish, Heineken bested Chip by 55 seconds while Chip nipped Joey by 5 seconds, followed closely by Headington and Lake.



In the second race, those starting on port increased to seven racers. About 75 yards from the start, Joey and Johnny collided kites with both kites going to the water. Joey recovered rather quickly finishing 4th while Johnny finished 8th. This was basically a port starboard situation with Heineken one of the port starters. At the windward mark it was Chip by about 30 yards followed by Stefaans, Lake and Koch, and then surprisingly Joey. Chip, Stefaans, and Lake all took an inside line to the leeward mark with Lake then going “outside.“ Interesting to note, if you are having difficulty finding Stefaans on the course, wait till the downwind leg…he’s the one riding toe side the entire way downwind. At the lee mark it was Chip, Stefaans, Lake, Koch and Joey…and that’s the way they finished except Joey overtook Koch on the last leg.



The last race of the evening saw Heineken go back to a starboard start with Lake on port…they were the lead racers and crossed in close proximity with Heineken a slight advantage. Johnny was first to the windward lay line, followed by Chip, Lake and Joey. Heineken rode down the middle to the lee mark while Lake took an inside line till about half way down and then went outside. Chip went outside and Joey and Koch stayed inside. At the lee mark it was Heineken by about 150 yards followed by Lake who had about 30 yards on Chip…then Joey and Koch. On the port tack going outside to get to the lay line, it appeared Chip was pointing higher than Lake but also appeared to tack onto starboard (lay line) a bit early which turned out to be costly as about 40 yards from the finish, Chip had to tack over again to make the finish and lost two places to Lake and Joey…so it was Heineken beating Lake by 105 seconds and Joey by 114.



Other than his mistake in the second race, Heineken was on top of his game, and clearly outpointed and rode the fastest. There was very close racing again through out the field…with close battles not only for 2,3,4, but for 5,6,7,8, and 9,10,11,12, and so on.



Overall for the evening it was Wasson on top with 7 points (2,1,4), and a three way tie for second with 10 points between Heineken (1,8,1), Lake (5,3,2), and Joey (3,4,3)…the tie breakers had them officially finish as listed. They were followed by Stefaans with 15 points (7,2,6) Koch with 16 points(6,5,5) and Headington with 18 (4,6,8).



For the women, it was Erika Heineken on top with 3 points (1,1,1), Sandy Parker with 6 points (2,2,2) and Boriana Viljoen with 9 points (3,3,3)

In the production fleet, it was Joey Pasquali on top with 3 points (1,1,1) and 4th overall, Eric Due with 6 points (2,2,2) and 8th overall, and John von Tesmar with 9 points (3,3,3).

Good luck to the American’s that I know are attending: Johnny Heineken, Joey Pasquali, Chip Wasson, Bryan Lake, Adam Koch (who will also be tuning up this Thurs), Damien LeRoy from Florida and Sky Solbach from the Gorge. I expect one of these guys to come the ßhome the WORLD CAMP, they capture the top three spots and even 7 of the top ten spots :=))
