Default Water Born TV - Creative Free Diving Videos

Kirk Krack of PFI has gotten together with some underwater enthusiasts such as Ren Chapman, Goh Iromoto and Shell Eisenberg among others, to create a creative video clip series dealing with free diving in unusual settings. The first installment was just launched yesterday, see below:

The crew traveled to New Providence in the Bahamas to work with Stuart Cove Dive Center in finding underwater locales. The clip opens with a fight/chase with Kirk going at it with
Shell Eisenberg through the scaffold remnants of the Vulcan Bomber in 45 ft. of water set from the classic 1964 James Bond movie "Thunderball" off southwest New Providence.

Kirk was saying he wears about triple the amount of normal weight to allow all the bottom action, flips and other gymnastics. That along with all the fast exertions, a normal thing to avoid in free diving, it is all quite an athletic accomplishment. They really whaled on it in the Vandenberg shoot on a particularly deep wreck. Kirk even confessed to kicking fellow actor Liz twice, had to hurt. They breathed up on 36% nitrox which aided their recovery time and vitality in general. I noticed the same thing during the dive scooter races on air vs. nitrox scuba. The extra O2 really helped with the stamina and reduced the fatigue after. It is interesting that not only the actors but also film crew were free diving. I understand they used safety divers in steel mail suits for the shark scenes on wreck of the "Ray of Hope."

The next segment in the clip takes place in the surreal framework of the wreck of the Will Aurie in 50 ft. of water. (youtube.com)

Here is what they have to say about the project on http://waterborntv.com/

"Water Born is a new web series that explores some of the world’s most unique underwater destinations alongside renowned freedivers on a journey of creative passion and the goal of producing mesmerizing visual films and works of art all beneath the surface of the water. The ultimate mission is to re-inspire, by a creative “out of the box” style of filming, an appreciation and excitement for 73% of the planet ocean.

Water Born was created by Marc Kaiser (President and CEO of Precision Health Care), Kirk Krack (President and Founder of Performance Freediving International) and Goh Iromoto (Award Winning Director / Cinematographer). The objective between the three was simple – To combine the key elements of adventure, freediving, and creativity, and to create a program that would open the eyes of people of all ages around the world to the unique world that exists underwater.

The main plotline in each episode is for the team to create an artistic short film all within the realm of breath hold. The stories all involve characters on breath hold and for the most part, the entire film crew is also on breath hold as well."

They undertook an interesting, demanding segment with a bunch of Caribbean reef sharks on the wreck of the "Ray of Hope." This was the deepest setting for the clip in 90 ft. of water and also included free diving penetrations into the wreck interior. (youtube.com)

The first episode is reminiscent of another demanding and fairly deep project, "Defending the Vandenberg" shot by Kirk and the PFI crew off Key West, FL in 2010.

Kirk also said ideas were drawn from videos of their free diving, dive scooter races in Grand Cayman in 2011. More about that at http://www.fksa.org/showthread.php?t=10716
