Default Ski Show & Warren Miller Brings SNOW To Ft. Lauderdale

I've heard we're due for a blizzard, actually two to hammer through the City soon.
It's almost fall and time to think about seasonal wind ... and the mountains!

First there is the SE Winter Sports Show '07 at the Broward Convention Center in Port Everglades
October 5 -7, 2007.
http://www.peterglenn.com/pglenn/text_1.asp?tx_id=82

This is a great place to pick up accessories, new snowboard, skies, boots, bindings at good prices.
I've cleaned up at the show for years, even got a good deal on a bike last year. You can even
meet the downhill hair master, Glenn Plake himself. I know he water skies, in a marble sack
no less but does he kite???

here comes Warren Miller again with the traveling premier of his Alpine Feature for 2007,
Playground, November 10, 2007 at the Broward Center For the Performing Arts.

You can checkout a trailer at:

Went to the SE Winter Sports Show in Ft. Lauderdale tonight. It is still running this Saturday and Sunday. Anyway, lots of great deals on ski, snowboarding gear and clothing. Picked up some Descente shell ski pants for $39. down from $180. and my wife scored some Spyder ski pants for $50, Hot Chillie undies for $15./piece, lots of great prices as always. There are the normal ski areas exhibiting along with a favorite, Alpine Adventures. These folks run great and incredibly reasonable packages (around $1200. for land and air) to the Alps even with the weak dollar.

Also, I got to meet a personal favorite from over the years, Glenn Plake! If you've watched Warren Miller flicks or RSN TV in the resorts you have seen the mohawked extreme skier for years. He really is a nice, lower key guy than you might think. I think he may be there over the next couple of days at one of the booths.

I asked him about extreme skiing in Chamonix, he has a place over there. We also talked about kiting/windsurfing on tape. We'll put that up soon here. Lots of wind in the forecast but if you want to hit the snow, need some stuff and can break away it may be worth a visit.

If Latino's Pier To Pier Race doesn't go this weekend, there is still Warren Miller's annual kickoff to ski season to checkout, "Playground."

More about Warren from Wikipedia:

Warren Miller was born in Hollywood, California on October 15, 1924. As a young man he took up the hobbies of skiing, surfing, and photography. At the age of 18, with the U.S. ten months into World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the South Pacific.[1] Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946 he bought his first 8mm movie camera. He and a friend moved to Sun Valley, Idaho where they camped in the parking lot of the Sun Valley ski resort, living out of a teardrop trailer and earning money as ski instructors. In their free time, they would film each other skiing to critique and improve their ski techniques. During the summers they shifted their lifestyle to the California coast where they filmed each other surfing.

Warren Miller would often show his skiing and surfing films to friends, making jokes about their exploits throughout the showing of the film. When he began to receive invitations to show and narrate his films at parties, it occurred to him that he could turn this hobby into a business. In 1949, Miller founded Warren Miller Entertainment and began a long standing tradition of producing one feature-length ski film per year. He rented out halls and theaters, usually with borrowed money, and charged admission to his shows. He booked show halls near ski resorts so that he could film the next year's footage during the day, and show the current film in the evening. Before long he was showing his films in 130 cities a year.

"Warren Miller's Children of Winter, the largest action sports film on the planet, is Warren Miller Entertainment's 59th film! Presented in striking high-definition and narrated by skiing icon Jonny Moseley, Warren Miller's Children of Winter showcases incredible cinematography that will get you craving deep powder, fresh lines, and outrageous adventure!

It's that time of year again. The Peter Glenn Ski and Sports show is going on this weekend at Pt. Everglades. If you need ski gear (I got a nice deal on a bike there one year), it is worth checking out.

http://www.peterglenn.com/content/la...orts-show-2009

... and the annual Warren Miller Film is on tap later on November 6, 2009. The title this year is "Dynasty," likely inspired by Warren's epic 60 year history of ski films.

"Celebrating 60 Years of Warren Miller Films
Narrated by Jonny Moseley and presented in high definition, Dynasty showcases a blend of fresh cinematography and vintage clips from the past six decades of Warren Miller footage. Join us for a breathtaking global tour that will get you ready for winter, craving snow and wishing you were out there riding!"
