Arrow 2011 & 2012 Orangebowl Paddleboard Championship in Photos & Video

Gary Menk and Ken Russell, Jimmy Lewis distributers for the USA, Central, South America and the Caribbean, ( http://fuacatasports.com/ ) had an idea for large SUP competition in Miami. They connected with the Orangebowl events committee and Big Brothers & Big Sisters organization, contacted the administration at the shoreside venue, Bayside, talked to the USCG and after a ton of work and permits later, we're there! They planned multiple races with the same start and finish within the marina at Bayside. One was a three mile race around Brickell Key and the other also including a roundtrip up the historical Miami River. The event was sanctioned by the World Paddle Association and was also the largest SUP race on the east coast of the USA.

The course for the 3 mile race

The course for the 5 mile race. This one included going around the island but first involved a run up the Miami River beneath several bridges including I-95.

Jimmy Lewis was a key sponsor of this Orangebowl Event with organization by the JL distributers for the USA, Central, South America and the Caribbean, Garry Menk and Ken Russell. The guys really had their work cut out for them but they pulled it off resulting in an exceptional fun event! Conditions were warm, sunny and calm for race day. There was a good turnout of both competitors and specatators at Bayside.

Packet tools around getting ready

Paula of ASM, Matheson Hammock Watersports concession, SUP yoga and a bunch of other fun stuff sports her Cabrinha riding gear, looking good.

Helga glides around getting ready for the race.

Folks glide into position for the first race, view from the south.

All smiles and ready to hit it!

Paddlers line up for the three mile race, view from the north. There is Jimmy Lewis and Brenda Lowe on the left. Jimmy is of course the world famous board shaper and manufacturer of so many great riding products and the sponsor of this event. Brenda is an all around athlete, "Survivor TV" series star, Dolphin cheerleader, paddler and a good deal more.

Jimmy wasn't up for togging out like Wonder Women so Brenda took the challenge.

Yoga on SUP boards has taken off, it shows in lots of the participants at this event.

The 3 mile contestants move up to the line while others standby at the dock for the 5 mile start.

... and they're off!

Here is a short GoPro video of the start of the 3 mile run.

Here is the lineup for the five mile race. If you look closely you'll see some twin racers. Subject motion during shooting of composite photos can result in people disappearing, losing their heads or in this case growing twins.

They're off and moving out fast! Danny is in the lead, the current world champion I understand to be chased throughout the contest by Packet and Brandon and a pack of other strong paddlers.

Garry Menk graciously let me come along on the lead boat to get some shots. We moved way ahead to avoid giving unfair advantage to paddlers on boards that like surf. You can see the folks just coming out of the marina.

Still more, the racers form a front and charge down the course.

Entering the Miami River from the Bay

Here's a look back from 1883, think it has changed much?

Some of the three milers break south around Brickell Key

Roray pulls hard throughout the race

The halfway buoy had been stolen naturally enough from the Miami River. So one of the dedicated five police boats served as halfway marker.

Packet and Brandon charge down river back to the bay

Adrian pulls out with Roray close behind and Peter a close third in the group. Peter is an accomplished photographer with some inspired underwater images in his portfolio.

A composite view out into Biscayne Bay

Roray and Peter go to it head to head.

The five milers head south to loop Brickell Key before the push back to the finish in Bayside.

The paddlers need to loop Brickell Key before running north back to Bayside marina to the finish.

More details and a few photos will be added so stop back by soon.

I have interest, I was #31 in the race. Orange shorts, green paddle jersey, and 14' custom downwind board. Would love to see your other photos.

Thanks for your input. I found a couple of starting line shots and added them to the account above. I am still going through and processing images from the rest of the race and day. I hope to find and add other images if I can find them.

You are welcome, hope to find more. Being on the lead boat and keeping away an inordinate distance to avoid creating surfable wake limited the number of paddlers I could shoot. Still there are a lot of images still to go through.
