Default virgina key to mathenson race sunday?

i'll be in tampa on saturday for the party and practice race. i was thinking of a down wind race in Miami on Sunday. nothing formal, 12 pk entry winner takes all. start at Virginia at 4:00. anyone in? it's only a 30 min ride in breeze. this would have to be informal. just a start and finish due to no permits, etc. this should be for only those that have good gear as the swim can be 5 hrs. plus if you break down in the wrong spot. this is a crossing, but a beach cruise.

after the race, it's food and beers at taco rico! let me know. don't want to waste the wind and this is good to tune up for the tampa bay and jupiter to ftl. race. less do it.

Hey Kent,

Sounds like a blast. I have been intrigued by your downwinder from around North Miami Beach (around 87th?) down to Matheson. Still, a shorter run would be fun too. Hope the wind gods are good to Florida this weekend! If not this time, I would really enjoy going at the run next time conditions and the will to do it strike. Lots of great kite stuff on tap for this weekend statewide!

Rick,

the ride is still 14 miles from virginia. actually, we could do a stage race. the first part could go to stiltsville, the second from stilts to math. the only reason i say this is that we can beg beers from stilts.

Sounds like fun Kent.
Right now our wind is looking pretty good for a downwind coast run on Saturday morning. You may want to put something up on the TampaBay KiteMasters section and try to get a practice run organized. Indian Rocks to St Pete Beach is a fun run. It is about 15 miles or 60% of the actual race.
btw.. Friday looks good from the south which means EAST BEACH at Fort DeSoto.

Jay,

I'm just an old guy not looking to beat anyone. i'll be lucky just to finish. i still think that we should do the full 27mi on sat at your place. 15 is just too short to bother. come on... you can win the beers!

The only thing i am seeing is that the wind may still be out of the WSW on Saturday morning. This should turn to the WNW to NW as the day goes on.
If you time it right you can leave from the bar on St Pete Beach, ride north for a couple hours, then as the wind switches you can turn around and sail back.
I've done it b4 but u have to time it right.

aaaahahahahaha!
How do you kite so well and with a walker Kent?!
Too funny.

They're predicting north winds for Sunday, a no go for Virginia, correct? I used to wait for NE winds to launch from there. Or can you launch far enough to the north off the eastern shore of the island to catch useable breeze out of the north? There could be some heavy wind shadow from Fisher Island and Sobe though.

Here's a thought, how about a downwinder to Boca Chica?

Rick,

north is ok to launch at Virginia, but it is actually difficult to get to matheson as it can get tight after coming around bill bags park. Sounds like i don't have to hurry back from Tampa!
