Meeting of the Broward Maritime Museum
The guys are getting organized with the intent of installing the Maritime Museum of Broward County at a permanent location in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. There is a meeting this coming Thursday night in that regard. It has existed as a traveling exhibit prior to this time. Some of the highlights will include: - I will present a newly prepared video and speak about our underwater expedition to Haiti in search of Christopher Columbus' ship the Santa Maria. That is Bill Raymond in the center, Greg McIntosh to the left and Sonny Cockerell to the right. They are running the hydraulic core drill in search of signs of the wreck entombed in the barrier reef miles off the coast of Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. - A Rebikoff Pegaus diver propulsion vehicle (DPV) will be donated to the museum and an historical overview of this remarkable device will be provided. It is configured not unlike an underwater airplane, with joystick for aileron control, rudder, some versions even had an artificial horizon in the instrument pod. A tricked out Pegasus makes the cover of Skin Diver Magazine - a treasure hunter will share memories of finding Mel Fisher's famous wreck of the treasure galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha off the Marquesas in the lower Florida Keys. Fishers salvage vessel, the JB Magruder at work off the Marquesas. - An overview will be presented of the 1835 wreck of the Gil Blas off Hillsboro Mile Beach and its pivotal significance in Florida History. A diorama of the wreck of the Gil Blas and salvage efforts. Don't forget! Thursday Sept 24 6:00, Meeting of the Broward Maritime Museum. Ft Lauderdale City Hall 100 N Andrews Ave Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 First Floor City Commission Chambers

There is a great meeting for this Friday, January 29, 2016 at 6 pm. The guest speaker is John Chatterton of the book "Shadow Divers"
and German Wold Pack Submarine U-869 fame. He will be presenting a video about this dramatic discovery and a great deal of even more recent work. He has also worked on submerged endeavors on Oak Island, the Titanic, the Lusitania, the Golden Fleece pirate ship, Japanese subs in Pearl Harbor, deep wall diving in Cay Sal Banks and still more. John Chatterton https://www.facebook.com/john.chatterton/ This appears on John's website: "John Chatterton is one of the world’s most accomplished and well known wreck divers. He was one of the co-hosts for 57 episodes of the History Channel’s Deep Sea Detectives television series, and has worked as a consultant to 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, and CBS. Prior to his career in television, John spent twenty years working as a commercial diver in and around New York City, and on September 11, 2001, was actually working on a project in the water underneath the World Financial Center, across the street from the Tower #1."http://www.johnchatterton.com/ http://www.johnchatterton.com/john-chatterton-blog/ "In 1991, a group of divers, including Richie Kohler and John Chatterton, set out on Seeker to explore an unknown object lying 230 feet (70 m) below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean and discover an apparent historical impossibility: a World War II German U-boat off the coast of New Jersey. Amazed at this discovery, Chatterton and his fellow divers make a pact to keep the U-Boat a secret until they can discover its identity and claim credit for its discovery. This is to prevent "wreck-jumping" (wherein another person claims credit and/or removes objects from the wreck). Unfortunately, this pact is broken almost immediately by a couple of members of the team who decide to tell close friends, and the secret is let out. Consulting both the United States Navy and the German Navy yields denials of the possibility of a World War II-era U-boat wreck in that area. Historical records claim the closest U-boat wreck to be hundreds of miles away. The book chronicles the seven year quest to learn the identity of the mysterious wreck, dubbed U-Who by the dive team, the identities of the men aboard her, and how she came to rest on the ocean floor near New Jersey. Over the length of the quest several members of the original dive team quit, either because their lives lead them elsewhere or over concerns for their safety. Several new members were brought in, including Richie Kohler, a member of the notorious "Atlantic Wreck Divers" club that had the reputation of being pirate-like and reckless in their diving philosophy. This philosophy is the complete opposite of Chatterton's, and Chatterton initially dislikes Kohler. However, during the course of the quest the two men discover qualities in each other they both admire and respect. Kohler himself is driven not by monetary desires but the history behind the wreck, and the personal connection he feels as his family is of German descent. He and Chatterton ultimately become close friends." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Divers You can read the final report on the discovery of the U Boat at http://www.johnchatterton.com/projec...eport-on-u869/ A shot from his 2009 expedition to Cay Sal Banks. I can recall deep scenes from the wall there like this diving it at 16 back in the day. http://www.johnchatterton.com/ John teaches tech and wreck diving classes these days at in SE Florida at times.
