Kiting through Fantasy Fest, Key West!!!
KITERS AT FANTASY FEST!!! Heading down to the Overseas Highway to Bone Island, Cayo Hueso or as some know it, Key West ... For some partying during Fantasy Fest with a foursome, and ... Some shredding in all that calm Keys water! Fantasy Fest is sort of a Halloween Mardi Gras that captures Conchs and tourists from all over into a massive party. The party cranks from October 22 through 31, 2004 with the big parade going off Saturday night, October 30, 2004. More about Fantasy Fest at: http://www.fantasyfest.net/ *** Cruising down the Keys, you should plan to stop off in Islamorada about halfway down, say hi to Brad Lange at Sevensports and shred a while. More at: http://sevensports.com/ Full size: http://www.fksa.org/albums/album20/Islamorada_VR_10.jpg The Launch. A view of the world famous sand BAR off of Islamorada. Grab a boat and cruise out to party on a weekend afternoon. The Bar. The 2004 Islamorada Invitational *** KEY WEST! Arriving at KW, crank up at island time ... Don't forget to bring your horns or whatever other mufti you like to tear around in on All Hallow's Eve. KW can offer up a mixed serving of nuts much of the year but they generally arrive in droves for the Fest. You'll get to hang with locals, that is the ones that didn't flee the island for the event. A Keys "Conch" with an early kite leash system. From: http://www.keyshistory.org/ They have a big parade down Duval every year, complete with floats and ... you get the idea. You can even show off your new kite design or as this guy managed, do wonders with toliet paper sculpture! Full size: http://www.fksa.org/albums/album20/KW_VR_3_s.jpg Don't forget the prime riding. It is possible to ride off of Smathers Beach in KW currently but MAN DON'T SCREW THINGS UP! They are very close to the road, airport, powerlines and beach goers. Use a kite leash, get offshore beyond the swimming area marked by pilings and stay there. Keep the happy juice for after kiting. There is too much at risk reversing the order, particularly here! More about kiting guidelines there at: http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=189&...asc&highlight= Smathers Beach Full size: http://www.fksa.org/gallery/view_pho...0&id=KW_VR_7_s Keep 'em flying at this incredible launch by NOT riding like a kook or some of the more bizarre locals will come looking for you! A pair of Conchs. The guy on the left (like the dozen or so that will come after you if ...) just had a secret Cayo Hueso booze surprise, the guy on the right is still waiting for his to showup. Of course you can suck down a can of suds. If you are hot, you can even spray on a bikini as shown here. HEY, somebody put that fish back in the water or at least give it a beer! This lady just heard her new black & white kite came in, SHE'S STOKED! Back at the beach, Paul Menta is just floating along. NOTE: These photos are from a year ago. Today, you would likely see him in a helmet. Times change.! There is a full complement of emergency staff on call for the event so feel at ease. Strolling down Duval, getting happy! Well, almost everyone is happy. This guy must have gotten stuck with the wrong blood type. All kinds out to be sure ... Just make a fashion statement ... or not. Riding time... More to come. This is just Part I! Copyright 2004 FKA, Inc. |

http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=68 You should get in touch with Paul Menta of thekitehouse.com about taking a ride out to the Key West Flats. It is calm with useable wind from all directions. More about that at: http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=576 http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=2545 There is Smathers Beach but it is useable for winds from the E to S to WSW. North of that line you are largely out of luck unless you travel north out of KW or head to the flats. There are kiting rules for Smathers at: http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=189 The forecast follows for this weekend: FRIDAY: SOUTHEAST WINDS NEAR 15 KNOTS. SEAS BEYOND THE REEF 3 TO 5 FEET. SEAS INSIDE THE REEF NEAR 2 FEET. NEARSHORE WATERS A MODERATE CHOP. ISOLATED SHOWERS. FRIDAY NIGHT: SOUTHEAST WINDS NEAR 15 KNOTS...BECOMING SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST BY MORNING. SEAS BEYOND THE REEF 3 TO 5 FEET. SEAS INSIDE THE REEF NEAR 2 FEET. NEARSHORE WATERS A MODERATE CHOP. ISOLATED SHOWERS EARLY...BECOMING SCATTERED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS LATE. SATURDAY: SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST WINDS 15 TO 20 KNOTS...BECOMING WEST TO NORTHWEST LATE. SEAS BEYOND THE REEF 4 TO 6 FEET. SEAS INSIDE THE REEF 2 TO 3 FEET. NEARSHORE WATERS CHOPPY. Here is another writeup from another Fantasy Fest when Paul Menta put us up over the Grand Restaurant on Duval opposite the Hard Rock Cafe. Paul moved on to Amigos a bit down the street. Still, nice images and great times!
