Default Oahu-Battle of the Paddle

(HONOLULU – (Sunday, June 13, 2010)

Local St. Pete Beach paddler, Chase Kosterlitz, places 3rd and 16th at the Battle of the Paddle where 600 Paddlers from Around the World Enjoy the Ultimate SUP Experience.

Stand-up paddling (SUP) came full circle back to its home in Waikiki, Hawaii two weeks ago. Over 600 of the world’s best paddlers competed in the inaugural Rainbow Sandals, Gerry Lopez, Battle of the Paddle Hawaii, presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection. St. Pete Beach resident, Chase Kosterlitz, traveled to Hawaii to compete in this world-renowned SUP race. Chase placed 3rd in the 10 mile stock class division and 16th in the Elite course race. “The Elite race was the most challenging SUP race I’ve ever competed in. It was awesome racing through the waves and gauging myself against the best paddlers in the world,” said Chase.

The world’s best paddlers converged on Waikiki for the weekend of racing. Californian, Danny Ching, and Australian, Travis Grant placed 1st and 2nd in the Men’s SUP division. The total prize purse for the weekend was $25,000, making the Battle of the Paddle the most lucrative race in the fast growing sport of stand up paddleboarding. Chase plans to continue to compete in future elite paddle events.

“It was really amazing to be in Hawaii and to compete with these athletes. I learned so much as the result of participating in this race and plan to continue to compete with the best,” said Chase. Between training and running his water sports business, “Water Monkey,” Chase hopes to stand on top of the winners podium soon!
