The results of day 1 of the contest are up. I am glad all the flooding and squally weather in recent days didn't impact getting things going up there.

There are a lot of DNFs particularly during the second race. Wonder what the difficulties were related to, light wind?

A quadcopter photo (?) from Brian Kender of the yacht club

A recap by Patrick from FB:

"Patrick Rynne Quick recap for race fans as everybody is asleep! Awesome day here in Shelter Island! Had great breeze from the W/SW from 7-18 knots. Super puffy and shifty. Racing happened right out in front of Shelter Island YC with tons of Jr. Sailors getting their first looks at kite foil racing. The race course was kept short to maximize action and give spectators a great view. Jon Modica (Cabrinha/Spotz) took double bullets, partly because he is fast and partly because we were easy on him since he's hosting the event and letting us crash at his house! In a 3 way tie for second are Damo LeRoy (Cabrinha/MHL Custom), Brian Kender (Cabrinha/???) and Zack Marks (Cabrinha/Ozone/Sword) who are all on different foils! I'm behind in 5th (Cabrinha/Aguera) but will likely fall due to the blistering speed of Leif Christian Given (Cabrinha/Ozone/Sword) and Jamie Douglas (Cabrinha/Spotz) who both had breakdowns/wraps take them out today. They'll be out for blood tomorrow! Big ups to the junior racers Jacob Olivier and James McGrath who were absolutely shredding! I heard chatter of port tack starts tomorrow out of them! Lots of racing on schedule for tomorrow, stay tuned!"

An update including photos from Jon Modica on the second day of racing as posting the event Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3331...group_activity

"Incredible conditions and competition at the East Coast KiteFoil Championships!

With our second day complete, we’re already seen world class racing and conditions at Shelter Island Yacht Club. We’ve had over 15knots of wind each day with blue skies and plenty of curious boats excited about the Kitefoilers reaching speed in excess of 30 knots!

With 7 races complete in the first 2 days, it’s incredible how close the top 3 riders are with only 1 point separating each. Going into the final day, it’s anyone’s race.

Full press release and final results coming out tomorrow!

BIG THANKS to our sponsors Cabrinha, Delta-Hydrofoils, & SKORD!"

The result of today (day 2):

The racing continues tomorrow.

Just received a press release with images from Damo LeRoy today via email, the text and attached photos of which follow:

2014 Cabrinha East Coast KiteFoil Championships

August 15th-17th will be a weekend to remember at Shelter Island Yacht Club as they became the first east coast sailing institution
to support the newest and most progressive form of sailing yet– Kitefoiling, which is the addition of a hydrofoil to a kiteboard.

The first annual 2014 East Coast KiteFoil Championships was a sight to behold with 3 days of beautiful conditions and winds ranging from 10-20 knots.

14 competitors from 4 different countries hit the water displaying just how far sailing has evolved.

The kitefoilers reached speeds of up to 30 knots during the action-packed races. The age bracket of competitors ranged from 14 years
old to 55 years old. Former kiteboarding world champion Damien Leroy said that “Shelter Island was an ideal location for this type of event”.

Dozens of boats stopped by to watch the races in awe as the kitefoilers flew around the course going more then 3 times the speed
of any other sailing craft on the water.

The races were incredibly tight with the top three racers within a point of each other in the end of the regatta, making every race fun
to watch! Some standouts were Leif Given, Zack Marks, Damien LeRoy and Jon Modica all taking wins in some of the races.

As well as two up and comers James Mcgrath and Jacob Olivier at the young age of 14 years old battling it out with some of the
top foil racers in the country!

Local kiteboarder, and event organizer, Jon Modica, said “he was extremely grateful to Shelter Island Yacht Club for supporting
this new and alternative form of sailing”, he believes kiteboarding “will really help get more and more youth excited about sailing”.

1st Place Jon Modica

2nd Place Damien LeRoy

3rd Place Zack Marks

A big thanks goes out to the sponsors: Shelter Island Yacht Club, Cabrinha Kiteboarding, Delta Hydrofoils, and SKORD. Thanks to
Photographer Manuel Olivier and GoPro for capturing the event as it unfolded.
